Volunteering at Halleck Creek Ranch (“HCR”) is the perfect opportunity for you! HCR is looking for active, energetic and caring volunteers to help grow our program. Founded in 1977, we are a 501c-3 non-profit adaptive horseback riding and groundwork program with two locations, one on Old Rancheria Road, and the other at Rock Rose Ranch, both in Nicasio (in West Marin, 30 minutes West of San Rafael, 30 minutes SW of Petaluma).
No horse experience is required, all training is provided, and learning is encouraged! Our horses are gentle, and volunteers ages 14 and up are encouraged to apply (12 years old with a parent for facility work). All volunteers must attend an orientation, complete the required paperwork and participate in on-going training during their period of service.
All volunteers who work with horses and clients begin their time as Sidewalkers. All Sidewalkers will have the opportunity to advance their skills to become Horse Handlers or Horse Leaders through our in depth training. Descriptions of our main volunteer roles are below!
Sidewalking: (walking next to the rider on horseback and providing stability for the rider if required, by holding or supporting their leg or ankle),
Horse Handlers: Assist Horse Leaders with tacking (putting on saddles and other equipment), grooming, and keeping the rider and horse safe on rides
Horse Leader: Taking the lead with horses on trail rides or arena rides, focusing on safety and both the horse and rider’s wellbeing
Facility Volunteers: Supporting the ranches by cleaning paddocks and water troughs, weeding, general repairs, and other duties as assigned by the Ranch Manager
This is an amazing opportunity to learn about supporting individuals living with cognitive and physical disabilities, horsemanship, and witnessing the incredible power of the human/horse bond.
