I would like to discuss the potentialities of creating a rpg or similar type game with other serious local people or persons. Why someone local? Well, why not? I feel the close proximity would foster a more immediate creative situation. It would also allow for occasional face to face meetings to brainstorm and the like. I am currently located forty miles north of Houston. It makes it real, in other words. We would have stake in each other's output and pursuits. And by local, I mean within the state of Texas.
I’ve spent most of my life writing and crafting stories as a hobby but always held more physical jobs. It has never been a career pursuit. I don’t have much in the way of technical computer knowledge and what I do have is all self-taught. No geeky friends to guide me along the way. I have always wanted to make an rpg game, however, and I want to find out if and how it would be possible. I found a free (with purchase of the game) custom campaign creator through Solasta crown of the magister and went to work.
Soon after I published my custom campaigns created through the engine, I was contacted by a small team of four fledgling devs in another country. They were very impressed with my campaigns and wanted to collaborate. I eventually declined partly out of a creative difference (it just wasn’t the sort of game I wanted to make and also the distance involved made me wary). Also, there was some clamor on the message boards imploring the developers to hire me a scenario writer for the Solasta sequel. Although it was flattering, I understand why developers don’t want to hire “the fans” and honestly, what I do is far different than what they do. Solasta isn’t a story game, it’s a D&D simulator. Those threads were summarily locked, then deleted.
But it did get me thinking, I would love to recreate that situation with a small group, or even one other person at the start and brainstorm together.
Who would be my ideal partner(s)? Firstly, out of necessity someone with the programming and technical chops I currently lack. Maybe you don’t exactly know how to proceed and just to talk and brainstorm. I would be open to discussing anything as I don’t know much either. Or maybe you have some idea of where you want to go and just want to bring a competent story-crafter. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
If you want to take a peek at what I have done...
I have made the highest rated story campaigns out of the (current) 800 hundred submissions. They have been downloaded 15k times across various sites.
The Ballad of Red Kent
• Nexus mod of the month winner
• Was the highest-rated individual custom mod for the first year of the module maker
Gwydion’s Folly:
• Nexus mod of the month winner.
• Steam poll: best overall story mod winner
• Featured on Neoseeker as a top three Solasta mod of all time. ( Best Mods - Solasta: Crown of the Magister - Neoseeker )
Destined to be Loveless:
• Nexus mod of the month nominee
• Featured in PC Gamer magazine as the best story Solasta campaign ( The best Solasta: Crown of the Magister mods | PC Gamer )
• Eighth overall highest rated campaign mod in Solasta history
The Heart of a Wizard:
• Nexus mod of the month nominee
• The only complete 20 + hour full story campaign among the over eight-hundred submissions.
Keep in mind when you play these that I could not spend nearly as much time on the writing as I would have liked. Most of the time spent in crafting in anything D&D related is the endless enemy encounter balancing. Also, I’m pretty obsessive regarding level design details. I honestly think I am a better designer than writer. One dovetails into the other. The game I am currently writing isn’t really a D&D game at all. But this was the only game in town so to speak, so it’s what I used. The game I want to make is far more esoteric, tragic, and mysterious than anything ever done in D&D. Think more like a Dark Souls mixed with Pillars of Eternity.
