European City Breaks That Won’t Break the Bank

With the summer bank holiday season approaching, it’s only natural to find yourself dreaming of a weekend getaway —or two. Of course, all those city breaks can add up, especially capital cities which tend to be more expensive than other destinations. When you begin to research holidays, next thing you’re bombarded with mobile advertising everywhere you look with holiday deals, which can often make things even more confusing. Thankfully, travel experts Alpharooms Ireland have conducted a study on popular European destinations where you can get more bang for your buck. The destinations are chosen based on the most visited European cities of 2018 (according to the Euromonitor International report) with the experts at Alpharooms calculating just how long a daily budget of €50 could last you in each, covering the cost of transport, food, one tourist attraction, and even a beer.

It won’t come as a surprise to learn that the city that topped the list as most expensive is London, where your €50 budget will only last you until approximately 12:30 pm. A daily budget for the English capital filled with dining out and seeing the sights the city has to offer will set you back roughly €118.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the cheapest city break destination is Antalya, Turkey. Here, your daily budget will last you the whole day with even some spare change. Coming in at third place is another Turkish city, Istanbul. Both Antalya and Istanbul made the list of top five most visited cities in Europe in 2018, and with so much culture to explore, paired with reasonable prices, it’s easy to see why tourists flock to these cities.

If you’re looking for a staycation in our very own capital, €50 will, unsurprisingly, not suffice; Dublin’s fair city will cost you a pretty penny with an average of €82 required per day. A few spots above Dublin, in second place, sits the French city of love. Paris not only comes in as the second most expensive destination in Europe, it also tops the list as the most expensive for eating and drinking but of course, that is no surprise given the city is synonymous with fine dining. For a full day in tourist mode, Paris will set you back almost double your budget at €96.

With all this data in mind, if you’re on the hunt for a city break that won’t break the bank this summer then Antalya, Prague and Istanbul will see that you stay under budget.
