For the seventh successive year, the innovative Scandinavian fashion brand COS will present an installation for Salon del Mobile in tandem with Milan Design Week. This year will be the first collaboration between the fashion brand and sculptural, light-based artist Phillip K. Smith III.
Hailing from the Palm Desert in California, Smith III is renowned for his mesmeric works which challenge his viewer to reevaluate their environment through altering light, colour, space and movement.
Previously, Phillip K. Smith III found Insta-fame with his 2014 and 2015 installations Reflection Field and Portals at music festival Coachella.Festival-goers were treated to gargantuan mirror towers followed, the next year, by an open-air installation surrounding a 35- foot mesquite tree.
This time, Philip K. Smith III, roused by the Milanese skies, Italy’s architectural renaissance and COS’s naturally minimalist designs, will create his most fervent architectural installation in the 16th century garden of Palazzo Isimbardi.
Karin Gustafsson, Creative Director of COS, said that they are eager to see how Smith III’s work responds to the environment of Milan. “It is from these experiences of art, which reshapes the way we see the world around us, that we derive so much of our inspiration at COS.”
COS’s SS18 collection converges timelessness, flexibility and reinvents classic pieces to function in the modern world.
However, it is the homage that COS pays to art and design with this season’s crafted clean lines, 3-d structure and environmental colour palettes that further adulates this melodious collaboration.
Phillip said he was thrilled to work with COS to “create this unique sculptural experience which will reframe the historic space. Characterised by ever-changing spatial and temporal elements, every visitor’s experience of the installation will be entirely individual.”
Last year COS partnered with Studio Swine to create New Spring, winning the Milano Design Award for Most Engaging Exhibition of Milan Design Week.
The installation will run from 17th of April 2018 to the 22nd at Palazzo Isimbardi, Corso Monforte 35, 20122 Milan.
