Dublin is renowned for its active and bohemian bar scene, thanks to continuous launches that aim to outdo their predecessor and as punters, why would we complain? Last night we saw the welcome launch of 9 Below. Touted as ‘Dublin’s Newest Luxury Bar Experience’ and with an address of 9 Stephen’s Green, placed under the historic Hibernian Club, they have set their sights high. However, this isn’t a first-time venture for the owners, 9 Below is part of the NolaClan collection which also includes House and 37 Dawson Street, House Limerick and House Belfast, so they happen to know a thing or two about what they are doing.

The aim of 9 Below is to take you back in time, to a time when prohibition enabled punters to find refuge in speakeasy cellar bars that indulged the bohemian, celebrity and cultural set. Its decor is luxurious but also extremely moody and romantic, it begs for cocktails and bourbon on the rocks – no alcopops here, please. Furnishings include deep-pile carpeting, sumptuous seating, moody lighting, brass table lamps on low tables, wood panelling and back-lit cabinets. But the most inviting aspect is the exclusivity of the venue, they want to make you feel special, to make you feel like you belong to an era long gone but still revered for its sophistication, glamour and opulence. Guests are met on arrival by Front of House Manager, Shane Lennon before being guided to a table in one of four rooms: The Cellar, The Drawing Room, The Lounge and The Bar.

The drinks menu is as impressive as their decor with a staggering 77 different types of whiskeys on offer, 34 of those being from Ireland. The cocktail menu is divided into the four different seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter – allowing you the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of flavours and combinations.

Using the Perlage champagne preservation system (a new patented technology for preserving opened bottles of sparkling wine that allows for no contamination to the taste or carbonation), 9 Below offers a selection of 26 different champagnes and this includes Perignon P2 by the glass, the only venue to do so in Ireland.

Ireland’s newest addition to the bar scene is open five nights a week, Tuesday to Saturday from 5 pm and is available for private bookings on Sundays and Mondays only for 100 people or less.

This is the style of bar I love, something rich and moody, that makes you feel like you are doing something wrong because you are enjoying it so much. A place that you come in for one drink but stay all evening lapping up the luxury and indulging the senses. Its elegance, its hidden-away qualities and its dedication to the best produce will guarantee the success of this new venture and I for one will be at the top of the line.
