The term self-awareness gets thrown around all the time. You will see it in self-help articles, books, and Reddit communities. At the same time, few people slow down to understand what it really is and how major of an impact it can have on life.
So, what is self-awareness and how does it affect personal growth? How does it affect the relationships we build with others? Are there specific ways to become more self-aware? We’ll try to answer these questions in the following guide.
Research suggests that people who see themselves clearly are more confident and fulfilled in life. This is precisely what self-awareness is.
Self-awareness focuses on understanding what makes each one of us unique. It is comprised of thoughts, emotions, experiences, memories and a little bit of self-analysis.
The term was coined in psychology back in 1972 when Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund developed the theory of self-awareness. According to these two psychologists, taking a look at oneself and evaluating strengths/weaknesses makes us more conscious of our everyday existence.
This being said, are there opportunities for cultivating self-awareness?
The short answer is yes.
Boosting self-awareness does require some conscious effort. Many people are afraid of giving these strategies a try because they’re afraid of what they’ll find. Gradual, small steps, however, can contribute to a slow and steady empowering process.
Attempting to look at yourself objectively is the first step. You need to pinpoint both your strengths and weaknesses, rather than focus on just one or the other. The easiest way to get started is to take a sheet of paper and create a list of personal pros and cons.
You should also encourage the people you value, to be honest with you. Allow them to point out your mistakes or some missed opportunities. If you become more receptive to such feedback, you will benefit from numerous learning chances.
Other techniques you can introduce to cultivate self-awareness include starting a journal, writing down your goals and plans for the future, practicing daily meditation to channel a bit of self-reflection, taking personality tests and not shying away from learning/growth opportunities at work or in society.
Self-awareness is fundamental to personal growth.
Our perspective on the current state of existence is largely determining the way in which goals and aspirations get set. If you believe that you’re currently a failure, you will eventually succumb to the fiascos in your life. If you perform some careful analysis of strengths and weaknesses, however, you will find your way out of a sticky situation.
Self-awareness pushes you to learn new things and to acquire the skills required to materialize your goals or overcome weaknesses. It gives you focus and purpose, which are both so tremendously important when attempting to accomplish something.
Self-awareness also keeps the transformative power inside of you. When you feel self-aware, you become less susceptible to external influences and the negative views that others may have of you.
Knowing who you are and what you want in life will make it so much easier to find people who share similar aspirations.
There are so many relationship skills in a modern world that you need to master. Still, the biggest essential is to start on an internal change.
What makes two people compatible? How do you assess potential partners? If you do not have intimate knowledge of your true self, you can succumb to shallow criteria that will make you accept people who aren’t an ideal match.
People who are self-aware understand their qualities, their needs and the things that they’d require from a partner. Self-awareness is also crucial to determine if you and a match share the same values in life.
Those who have heightened self-knowledge are also recognized for the better emotional control they exercise in all kinds of life scenarios. And emotional control is obviously essential for building strong relationships. Succumbing to a strong feeling without the backing of some rational thought can contribute to truly toxic relationships that don’t bring anything beneficial to the table.
Finally, you become a much better communicator when you possess a ton of self-knowledge. Needless to say, communication is the heart and soul of strong, meaningful connections. You will respond to situations with insights and understanding, moving from one relationship stage to another with ease.
Cultivating self-awareness should start at an early age but it’s never too late to start taking a look inside.
If you feel that something’s missing and you’re unfulfilled in certain aspects of your life, chances are that you’re lacking in self-knowledge. While looking at your naked self can be scary, it’s the only way to pinpoint chances for growth. It’s time to take control and focus your life on the things that matter the most.
