In 2019, the on-demand economy is thriving. No matter where you are, as long as you have a smartphone and credit or debit card at your disposable, you can pretty much have anything you want with the touch of a button. This see-now-must-buy-now attitude established by millennials and perpetuated by Gen Zers has paved the way for innovative companies that have revolutionised the way we shop for and purchase goods without ever having to leave the house — though we do recommend you get outside every once in a while for some fresh air. Below, you’ll find five very different but very cool, stylish companies that cater to this new way of living with their unique and time-saving services that will leave you wondering how we ever lived without them.

Ace & Tate

Spectacled friends may already be aware of this ultra cool eyewear brand which opened its first Irish store on Wicklow St late last year, but for those not in-the-know, Ace & Tate’s home try-on service is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Removing the hassle and stress out of buying prescription glasses, the innovative yet simple service allows you to test out a handful of different styles in the comfort of your own home for free.

Having personally tested out this service myself, I can attest to just how brilliant it is. If you’ve ever felt the pressure of having to commit to a pair of frames having only tried them on once — under harsh store lighting, might I add — then this will be a welcome change to the process of buying new glasses. You can choose up to four different frames from the online catalogue and have them delivered straight to your door for free. You’ve then got up to five days to test out the frames (no prescription included) before sending them back (again, free of charge). If any of the frames tickled your fancy, you can place an order for them online but there is no obligation for you to buy once you’ve used the service.

Not only is this a handy alternative for those who live outside of Dublin, or for those who are lazy like me, but it also means you can test out different frames in a variety of settings and outfits to see what suits you and your personality best before you commit to purchase. Win-win.

The Skin Nerd

Not everyone can afford the money or the time to see a dermatologist or skin specialist but The Skin Nerd’s online consultation service means that anyone can experience great skin. For €50, you can book a consultation with a member of The Skin Nerd’s team of qualified skin analysts, also known as the Nerdettes, who will create a skincare regime tailored to you and your skincare concerns. The initial consultation can take place either on Skype or WhatsApp and lasts for approximately 30 minutes, after which the Nerdette will recommend products for the inside (supplements), outside (skincare), and on top (makeup) from a range of thirty brands. Simply find a time and date that suits via the online booking form and wait for them to come to a computer screen near you.

Threads Styling

Have you ever found yourself lusting after a pair of (old) Céline sunglasses or highly coveted Chanel pumps that you saw on Instagram but, for love nor money, you cannot find where to buy them online? Whatever you’re looking for, from fine jewellery and bespoke couture to the latest streetwear, Threads Styling’s team of personal stylists will track it down and send it to you anywhere in the world. The luxury e-commerce personal shopping service takes the (sometimes) hard and frantic work out of shopping for today’s must-have items and does it all for you, saving you hours of endless scrolling. Available via Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat and WeChat, Threads Styling works like this: you send an image of the item(s) you’re looking for, along with your size, and wait for them to come back to you with their findings — often within a couple of hours. They’ll let you know the price, the retailer’s returns policy, plus Thread’s additional finding fee (approximately 10%), and, hey presto, the thing you wanted most will soon be yours.
