We often associate trends to fashion, but interiors are also defined by wider trends that are either influenced by global movements, interior designers or even the Pantone Colour of the Year. A Nordic minimalist approach to design has dominated the decor world for the last few years, and although the Hygge palette and choice of interiors has not permanently departed, it has somewhat been replaced by colour, decadence and an increased desire for a more maximalist approach to designing living spaces. Sofas, therefore, have become not only a functional and integral part of your living room but a creative expression of your personality and can define the tone of your home within seconds. For SS19, sofa experts, DFS celebrates these trends and offers a drool-worthy collection of pieces for your home.

We have taken some visual guidance from some of the world’s leading interior designers showcasing this season’s trends to inspire you and give you some very serious home goals to aspire to.

Floral

From tropical botany to classic French patterns, floral continues to trend in interiors. Watercolour paint strokes and classic delicate petals that emulate regal or country estates provide the backdrop to more romantic living room settings, while tropical botany prints echo the overall trend in both fashion and interiors for SS19 of far-flung exotic landscapes that are complemented by earthy and rustic tones.

Colour

Moving away from the muted tones of Nordic palettes, in 2019, rich bold jewel colours are making a strong comeback. Accents of decadently rich colours in even richer and sumptuous fabrics have transformative powers with the ability to instantly create an atmosphere of luxury and personality in any room. Fuschsia, teals and mustard hues are leading the way with Pinterest revealing mustard as the key colour of the year with searches for this retro shade up by 45% and still growing.

Texture

Luxe has been the buzzword in the interiors world for a number of years with decadent fabrics creating opulent settings at home, transforming minimal spaces into rich environments. Velvet, most notably, has become the texture of choice with internet searches for the plush fabric increasing by 400% in the last year with no signs of abating.

While velvet was trending in the decor world, this was also reflected in the fashion world, so when in AW18 we saw another retro fabric revival on the fashion scene, it was obvious that the interiors world would shortly follow suit. Cord was without a doubt one of the biggest and most popular trends of AW18 and now for SS19 interiors we are seeing this equally sumptuous fabric being re-introduced into our lives and homes.

However, in order to avoid any original connections to its 1970s roots, it is best to choose it in a modern colour such as mint and pastel pink which create a calming effect while adding understated luxury and contemporary vibes to your space.

Maximalism

For years Scandinavian-inspired minimalism dominated our Instagram feeds, our interior goals and our design aesthetic, but interior trends are as cyclical as fashion and what was once pure design gold is now replaced with a maximalist taste. With a changing movement happening globally in expressionism and a rise for defiance, this has become reflected too in interior design. An assertion of eclecticism, a rise of bohemian spirit where clashing textures and patterns merged with uniquely sourced pieces represent a spirited spontaneity in home-styling that is taking over Instagram, with homes all over the world embracing it.
