As the seasons change and the nights get longer, thoughts turn to making our homes cosier. Generally this involves stocking up on wood for the inevitable fires, cheeky splurges on new soft throws for the couch (crucial for any self-respecting Netflix obsessor) and thinking about new ways to light the house. I’m not kidding.
Lighting is integral to creating a warm and inviting home in the darker months but we’re not talking about that ‘makes-you-squint’, almost fluorescent overhead lighting. Oh no. We’re talking about ambient lighting – moody lighting that will instantly evoke thoughts of warm socks and mulled wine as soon as you walk in the front door from work. Check out some of our tips to integrate stylish, ambient lighting to your home this winter.
Give your space a gorgeous glow with a string of lights. These types of lights are so versatile – hang them over your bed, pop them into a glass bell jar or drape them over the mantel to create a cosy but cool look.

Floor lamps are fantastic for adding directional, soft light – place yours next to your couch or a favourite reading nook for an easy-to-reach lighting source that, if it’s anything like this Giant Anglepoise Light from Abigail Ahern – will make a serious statement in your room, day or night!

Take a subtle route to side lighting with an exposed bulb table light like this brass light from Danish brand H. Skjalm P. The shiny metallic surface bounces light much more than a matte surface and in doing so creates a beautiful warm glow.

Have fun with your side lighting! Take this terrific Elephant table lamp from Rockett St George – it’s quirky to the max but also creates a beautiful soft light that is ideal for the bedroom.
