In December last year, it was announced that Raf Simons had stepped down from his role as chief creative officer of Calvin Klein and left the company. After a short tenure that saw the designer create four ready-to-wear collections, one Resort collection and one Pre-Fall collection — which was to be his last —, Simons’ critically-acclaimed designs are said to have missed the mark commercially and did not convert into sales, ultimately leading to his departure.
Now, less than three months on from the unexpected news of his exit, Calvin Klein Inc. has announced the closure of the luxury arm of its business in its entirety. Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, the name given to the luxury collections by Simons, will not continue next season, despite reported plans to relaunch it under yet another new name with a new brand direction.
The iconic American brand will instead focus on its mid-range underwear and denim collections, which are its most profitable categories. Calvin Klein Underwear, in particular, has been an unrivalled success for the brand in recent years thanks to the prolific #MYCALVINS campaign featuring Kendall Jenner, ASAP Rocky, and most recently, Shawn Mendes.
