Have you ever questioned how celebrities look so good all of the time? Surely it’s a trick of good lighting, you tell yourself, but those candid street style shots say otherwise. Rest assured as more often than not they have had a helping hand in the fashion department and are not simply flawless human beings (Olivia Palermo may be the exception to this).
In the current age of social media, celebrity stylists have become more and more common, often becoming celebrities in their own right such as Rachel Zoe whose eponymous fashion line now shows at New York Fashion Week. They work endless hours (and can earn up to $50,000 for one red carpet look) to ensure their client looks impeccable from every angle, no matter where they are, and yes, this even includes putting together outfits for their client to wear while running daily errands on the off chance they’re snapped by an unyielding photo lens. Below, we’ve rounded up our top stylists who lend their fashion expertise to some of Hollywood’s most stylish along with their best looks.
You may not know her name but chances are you know her clients. Karla Welch is stylist to a unique variety of A-listers such as Olivia Wilde, Karlie Kloss, Sarah Paulson, and Justin Bieber but it was when she took on the then relatively unknown Ruth Negga in advance of her press tour for the film Loving, for which she was Oscar-nominated, that Welch cemented herself as The Most Powerful Stylist of 2017 (as voted by The Hollywood Reporter) and gained Negga the top spot on every Best Dressed list during the last awards season.
You may have noticed that singer Selena Gomez has transformed her style over the past two years, becoming a regular on Best Dressed lists whether she’s attending a formal event or travelling through an airport, and this is all down to Kate Young. The stylist began working with Gomez in 2014, revamping the former Disney star’s wardrobe and creating a new signature look for her. Young also works with eternally well-dressed actresses such as Sienna Miller and Michelle Williams. The stylist’s ability to turn celebrities into sartorial ‘It’ girls secured her the top spot on the Most Powerful Stylist list in 2016 and 2012 respectively.
If you ‘keep up’ with the Kardashians then you will have seen this LA-based stylist’s work. Monica Rose made a name for herself when she began working with Kim Kardashian in 2008, and soon after became both Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s stylist. While Rose infamously no longer works with the Kardashians, she does pull together looks for Chrissy Teigen, Gigi Hadid, and Chanel Iman. For those who are a fan of the off-duty supermodel style, Monica Rose plays a huge hand in this. Unlike previous stylists mentioned, Rose certainly has a ‘look’ that her clients all perpetuate.
