Most of us enjoy a retail therapy outing. It’s an opportunity to buy something that you’ve been lusting after all season and treat yourself to a well-deserved gift. Naturally, the majority of us also enjoy travelling and exploring a new or old favourite city. So, with that in mind, it would make sense to combine two great experiences to create one unforgettable getaway, right? With oversized shopping centres, renowned markets, and breathtaking high streets, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite cities around the world that can offer a shopping trip you won’t forget.

With stunning parks and winding boulevards, it’s easy to see why Madrid is one of Spain’s most popular cities, both to visit and to live in. It’s famous for sidewalk cafés, museums, and high-end shopping facilities. Whether you’re on the hunt for extravagant brands or opulent local wares, you’ll have no problem flexing the plastic in this shopping destination.

Take a stroll around the streets of Calle Toledo for an authentic shopping experience or hit the Moda Shopping Mall, Plaza Norte 2 or ABC Serrano Centre for retail therapy at its best.

Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s most popular and well-known shopping districts. Department stores, megastores, malls, and skyscrapers provide high-energy, first-class shopping at its very best. While a shop until you drop vacation isn’t within everyone’s reach, that’s not to say you can’t indulge in a little window shopping the next time you’re away.

It is Tokyo’s Ginza district in particular that lottery provider Lottoland chose to feature in an infographic titled ‘where to shop like a lottery winner,’ which includes other popular retail destinations such as Dusseldorf and Berlin. Even if the next Euro Millions jackpot isn’t yours for the taking, you can still walk through these top shopping destinations. Besides, just looking won’t hurt your credit card.

Dubai is awash with flash Ferraris and 5-star hotels. It’s also a city of firsts. Not only is Dubai the Middle East’s business hub with stunning architecture, but this is where the rich come to shop. You’ll find some of the biggest centres in the world here, including Lamcy Plaza, the Mall of the Emirates, and The Dubai Mall.

If you’re keen to shop like a ‘Real Housewife’, or even pretend to be one for a day while window shopping, you’ll find everything in Dubai from gadgets to fashion and some of the most astounding jewels.

If you’ve never been to Moscow, you might be pleasantly surprised to hear it’s a fashion mecca, complete with expensive boutiques. You’ll find everything in the city, from Soviet vintage threads to haute couture that you can max the credit card on—or at least dream about.

Most of the city’s shopping centres are attractions in their own right due to their incredible design and architecture. Home to both high-end and high street brands, Moscow offers just the ideal shopping therapy you might need.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong bustles with sprawling shopping centres, high-rise buildings, and crowded street markets where you can pick up just about anything.

For shoppers on the hunt for high fashion, technology, and jewellery, there is an abundance of malls to visit. The ICF Mall not only has some of the best designer stores in the city, but it’s renowned for fine restaurants with sprawling views over Victoria Harbor.

New York City

Of course, we couldn’t finish this list without mentioning the Big Apple. New York’s iconic Fifth Avenue is flooded with classics like Tiffany’s, FAO Schwartz, Saks, and Bergdorf Goodman to name but a few. It’s even home to a flagship Apple store that’s open 24 hours a day—just in case.

A trip to New York City is not complete if you don’t at least browse some of these top stores and, if you dare, treat yourself to a little blue box from a certain boutique.

Even if your lotto ticket has yet to bring you any luck, or you just fancy browsing, there are plenty of big cities with incredible shopping experiences around the globe just waiting for you.
