Much like strappy sandals, there’s another throwback trend that Carrie Bradshaw once loved making a stylish return.

The baguette bag, which hails from the late ’90s and remained popular throughout the early ’00s, is once again the bag at everyone’s fingertips. First released in 1997 by Fendi, the long, rectangular shoulder bag was one of the first ‘It’ bags, toted by everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Paris Hilton. Now, in 2019, this iconic shape has been spotted under the arms of the Hadids, Olivia Palermo, Emma Roberts, even Sarah Jessica Parker has rekindled her love of the retro style, bringing the trend full circle.

Second episode of « how french girls carry their baguette » #baguettebag #plusjamaisfaim

A post shared by Adenorah (@annelauremais) on

Originally named in homage to our favourite French bread, a baguette bag is designed to nestle under the arm—just like those cool French girls carry actual baguettes out of the bakery each morning (see Anne-Laure Mais’ hilarious video above for reference). Best worn close to the body, it offers a welcome break from the recent craze for handheld bags.

While such bags including basket bags and beaded bags were the hits of the summer, coming into autumn, a baguette will be your hero piece. Style it with anything, be it your favourite jeans and perfect white tee for a casual weekend look, with tailored trousers and a blazer for work, or take your style cues from Lucy Williams and team it with a slinky slip dress for an evening soirée. Whatever way you dress it up, a baguette bag is the perfect appetiser this autumn. Shop our favourites, from high street to high end, in the edit below.
