Spotted: A Gossip Girl reboot in the making, seven years after the series finale.
The new 10-episode series was confirmed by Joshua Safran, an executive producer on the show, and will return to our screens sooner than we could have anticipated.
Described as a sequel-style “extension” of the original show, the reboot isn’t expected to pick up where the OG Upper East Siders left off but instead focus on a new cast of New York private school teens.
A summary for the show’s new plot goes as follows: “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”
Intrigued? Us too but unfortunately we’ll have to wait until next year for Gossip Girl 2.0 to air. But in the meantime, we’re taking a look back at the wardrobes of arguably the most stylish TV characters the Noughties ever saw, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, and asking, what would Blair and Serena wear in 2019?
Serena’s style was reminiscent of Sienna Miller’s boho era if Sienna Miller was a privileged teenager who lived on the Upper East Side. Full of extra short mini dresses, mini skirts and hotpants, as well as an infinite number of waistcoats and blazers, her wardrobe was quintessentially bohemian-meets-schoolgirl-prep.
Instead of a backpack, her go-to was an oversized slouchy bag that defined the Noughties, while her footwear of choice was often a pair of knee-high boots or sky-high stilettos.
While her style naturally matured as the series carried on, ditching the schoolgirl-next-door vibes in favour of Hervé Léger bandage dresses, there’s one thing that never changed: her love of sequins. Whether it was in the form of a blazer or a floor-length gown, sequins were Serena’s signature touch.
Today, Serena’s style would still embody that effortless bohemian spirit she became known for but with a more refined, sleeker aesthetic. Think Isabel Marant with a side of Gucci and Balmain.
While many consider Serena to be Gossip Girl’s most stylish, it’s Blair Waldorf who is the true style icon. Queen B gave us some of Gossip Girl’s most unforgettable looks over the course of six seasons, most of which are still relevant today. Her particular brand of schoolgirl prep, which favoured coloured tights, plaid and headbands, lives on in the current collections of Prada, Gucci, and Miu Miu. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Gucci’s collections in recent years were made with one particular Upper East Sider in mind. Is Alessandro Michele secretly Blair Waldorf’s biggest fan?
While her wardrobe choices were eclectic, she was also meticulous in what she wore and how. Everything matched and was accessorised to the max.
Today, Blair’s style would be as maximal as ever, with a particular soft spot for SS19’s hair accessories trend, owning a different Prada headband for every day of the week.
