8 Ways to Style a Little White Dress

Words by Tess DiNapoli

As a fresher, cooler counterpart to the little black dress, a little white dress can make a huge splash at any summer, spring, or even autumn event. Styling your LWD should be just as easy as the LBD, particularly in this current bout of good weather. So, here are 8 ways you can accessorise this closet staple this season:

Jewellery Makes the Perfect Accessory

With so many fun and exciting jewellery trends ongoing this season, styling an outfit without at least one piece could be considered a crime. The perfect jewellery will accentuate a little white dress and make it stand out, and the key here is to pick pieces that complement your overall look. These bold geometric drop earrings from Capulet & Montague pair well with simpler dresses that feature clean, crisp lines (think layers, unique finishes and interesting textures!) whereas a boho-esque white dress with intricate crochet details may be attention-grabbing enough on its own, and only needs a simple bangle bracelet or a pair of thin gold hoops to finish off the look.

The Right Shoes for the Job

If you’re wearing your little white dress to a party, the beach, or even a work event, you’ll want to make sure you have the best footwear to set your look apart and make you feel put together for the occasion. For more formal events, consider a pair of strappy sandals or platform wedges à la Lucy Williams; for casual days, think this season’s must-have mules, sandals, and flats.

A Bag is the Perfect Finishing Touch

A sleek crossbody, a dainty micro bag, or a large straw tote that can haul all your stuff in are just a few options for pairing with your dress this season. The best part about matching your bag to your LWD is the neutrality of the dress. You can wear any colour bag with it and still look (and feel) good about it.

For simplicity, choose a neutral colour bag that blends with your outfit or, alternatively, choose a bright summer colour like rust orange or yellow to make it pop. While you don’t have to match your shoes to your bag (in fact, never do this), carefully consider which colours work best with the bag you choose. This is also the perfect time to experiment with different materials to pair with it – from this Pixie Market beaded bag to a raffia tote as seen below on Monikh or even clear see-through bags such as this one from Staud which just so happens to be on sale right now.

Add a Shirt Underneath

When the temperature drops and you’re dying to keep wearing your little white dress, just add an extra layer. A crisp white shirt or classic tee underneath a tank-style dress creates an air of ‘off-duty cool’ that people will be dying to copy. What’s even better? You can carry this look into autumn and even early winter!

Go Tonal

Most people wouldn’t immediately think of teaming their dress with similarly white, cream or beige accessories, but you should do just that. Adding tonal accessories such as a bag or a headband to your LWD will help it stand out and while at the same time keeping your look neutral. Mango has a great array of tonal accessories that will help create the perfect daytime look.

Use Makeup as an Accent

Whether or not you want to add any accessories to your look, you can still always use yourself as a canvas to showcase your style and personality. Experiment with makeup to create a bold look with red lipstick or play up your eyes with bright eyeshadows or liners like Tar Mar.

Hats Do Double Duty

Hats have really made a comeback this summer both on and off the catwalk, but the best part is that they’re practical as well as stylish. Not only can they protect your skin and hair from UV rays, but the right hat will also help hide a bad hair day or pull together the little white dress outfit you just threw on while you were running late for your appointment. Take your cues from Jacquemus and add a supersized straw hat to your wardrobe for a relaxed resort vibe, or go for a bucket hat for a retro-inspired look that will take you straight back to the nineties in the best possible way.

Make the Look Casual

Casual wear is perfect for going to brunch or enjoying a relaxing summer afternoon shopping in town. Even when you dress a little white dress down, you’ll still look and feel stylish in an effortlessly carefree kind of way. White trainers have taken in recent years, and for good reason – they are incredibly versatile and easy to style. Wear these high tops by Toast with your white dress, grab your favourite bag and you’re all ready to go.
