Ah, the humble white tee. When you think you’ve got ‘nothing to wear’, a white T-shirt will never let you down. Whether layered under a dress, tucked into your favourite jeans or, as we’re seeing so often this season, paired with matching white or cream trousers for a tonal look, a white tee can be worn anywhere with anything. Quite like a white button-down, it’s a wardrobe staple you can always rely on, and most importantly, one that will never date. The hero piece of every season, a white T-shirt is a must-have for winter, spring, summer and autumn. Just ask Victoria Beckham who is an avid fan of a classic white tee and has been spotted time and time again wearing one tucked into high-waisted trousers and a pair of heels: the epitome of casual-chic. But while everyone’s got their two pence on this wardrobe essential, not all white tees are made equal. Whether you’re after a boyish fit, the perfect V-neck or a tee that’s sustainable, discover the best white T-shirts worth buying below.

& Other Stories Boxy Organic Cotton Tee, €19

& Other Stories sells an array of white T-shirts, all of which are good, but this boxy tee is one of their better offerings. With wide-cut sleeves and a looser fit, this T-shirt is uber flattering on and looks great when teamed with smart trousers or tucked into a satin skirt. As a bonus, it’s also made from organic cotton which uses far less water than conventionally grown cotton so it’s better for the environment too. No need to size up when it comes to this tee: choose your normal size.

Victoria Beckham Oversized T-Shirt, €224

If you’re going to channel Posh Spice then you ought to be wearing the Victoria Beckham Oversized T-shirt while doing so. The relaxed, menswear-inspired cut adds nonchalance to any ensemble but looks best when tucked into high-waisted trousers and paired with strappy heels for an elevated daytime look, just like VB would do it. When it comes to oversized tees, there’s simply no better.

Current/Elliott The Perfect V Tee, $98

Not everyone favours a crew neck — I get that and so does denim brand Current/Elliott. The Perfect V Tee is for those of you who prefer something a little more low-cut without being too low-cut (it’s a fine line). Cut with just enough drape to tuck into your favourite jeans, yet still fitted enough to look great worn loose, it really is perfect.

Arket Crew Neck T-Shirt, €15

A crew neck is a classic for a reason, not least because the neckline is flattering on just about everyone. This particular version by Arket ticks all the boxes with ribbed piping around the neck which adds a touch of formality and sleeves that hit just the right spot. Go one size up for a looser fit or stick to your usual size for a neat silhouette. Or, at €15 a piece, why not buy one of each?

Ninety Percent Linen Jersey T-Shirt, €47

London-based label Ninety Percent is looking to change the landscape of fashion by using sustainable practices to create elevated basics. A case in point: this lightweight T-shirt which eschews cotton in favour of linen. Not only is linen the perfect choice for a T-shirt when it comes to the warm summer months, it’s also the more sustainable option. If you’re looking to make your wardrobe more eco-friendly, start here.

Uniqlo U Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt, €9.90

This T-shirt is my personal favourite — so much so that I own two. Slightly thicker than the rest of those mentioned but also the softest, Uniqlo’s cotton crew neck tee is the holy grail of T-shirts. It features a straight cut which is neither too loose nor too fitted; it’s just right. You can wash it as often as you feel fit and it will not lose its shape (which speaks volumes for a T-shirt that costs less than a tenner). And while the thicker fabric means it’s not ideal for hot summer days, it does lend itself to opacity; it’s not at all see-through which is rare for a white tee. If you’re looking for a T-shirt that’s smart enough for work, this is it.
