Various shoe trends have come and gone in recent years. Some were so good they ultimately became wardrobe staples — hello, trainers — while others fell to the wayside after a mere season in the spotlight (read: Crocs). This season, however, sees the return of a Nineties classic so good you’ll wonder why they ever fell out of fashion.

From Paris to New York and every city in between, strappy sandals were present in almost every spring 2019 collection including Jacquemus, Isabel Marant, Rejina Pyo, Alexa Chung, and The Row, whose minimal ‘Bare’ sandals have become a sell-out hit, spotted on the likes of fashion blogger Pernille Teisbaek, stylist Sophia Roe and fashion director Lisa Aiken.

But what is it about this style of shoe that has caused such a sensation? With super skinny, barely there straps and slender kitten-esque heels, they’re a breath of fresh air — quite literally — after being cooped up in ankle boots and chunky trainers for so long. The approach of sandal season has us looking for alternative footwear to slide into, and given our current love affair with all things Nineties (bucket hats, cycling shorts, tiny sunglasses…the list is endless), what could be better than a pair of shoes Carrie Bradshaw would have loved?

The naked sandal, as Net-a-Porter calls them, is your wear-anywhere-with-anything shoe. Though they may look like the ideal going out shoes — they are — that’s not to say you can’t wear them day to day as well. In fact, you should. Strappy sandals are the perfect smart casual shoes that will bring you from the office to the bar to brunch the next day, and therein lies the true beauty of them. The lower heel height means they’re comfortable enough to wear all day while their minimalistic design allows you to pair them with just about anything. If you ask us, we think they’d look great styled simply with raw hem denim jeans and a crisp white tee for understated elegance — or with a slinky slip dress, just like Carrie would have worn them.
