Spring not only gives us that much-needed glimpse of summer thanks to its (usually) warmer weather and sunnier skies, but it also gives us that welcome relief from knitted jumpers and numerous layers. So, what can we expect in terms of trends this spring? As always, there are dozens to choose from, but we’ve picked out the key trends worth adding to your wardrobe this season below.
Are you bored of hearing animal print is still a trend yet? At this rate, it may as well be a staple given it’s been trending for so many consecutive seasons. From leopard and cobra to zebra and tiger, these prints are dominating fashion this spring and show no signs of letting up any time soon so if you haven’t already given in to this graphic trend, now is as good a time as any. For the daring amongst you, there are midi dresses, jumpsuits and mix-and-match coordinates available to wear it head to toe. But, if you want something more subtle, you can easily embrace this trend with a decorative hair scrunchy or pair of shoes.
The word beige doesn’t tend to induce a lot of excitement, but when it comes to your wardrobe this spring, it’s one of the chicest, most flattering colours out there. Beige encompasses colours like blush, biscuit, oatmeal, and off-white, giving you great scope and providing you with sophisticated ensembles that look expensive — regardless of whether they are or not.
We already saw these being introduced last summer and the great news is, prairie dresses are here to stay for spring 2019. Easy to wear with little need for ironing, this style of dress comes in a multitude of colours and prints this season – what more could you ask for? The often long-sleeved, embroidered or floral dresses transition easily from day to night with absolute ease, and they look effortlessly elegant — the ultimate throw on and go. While they may look uber feminine while on a hanger, a prairie style dress almost looks better when toughened up a little with a pair of chunky biker boots or trainers and a leather jacket on top, making it work whatever your style.
Mini bags will still prevail throughout spring/summer this year, but the more dominant of mantras will be ‘bigger is better’ as seen at Loewe. So, essentially, anything goes, which is why retailers like Radley are embracing all sizes of bags this season. This bigger and bolder look also transcends to all accessories, including shoes (platforms FTW) and jewellery.
Did you ever expect to see tie-dye back on the menu of sartorial hits? No longer reserved to the summer days of your childhood, the do-it-yourself wear has been given a luxe make-over for the modern day by Rosie Assoulin, Stella McCartney, and Prabal Gurung to name but a few.
The majority of people have welcomed athleisure with open arms as it’s one of few trends that allows you to be stylish and comfortable. Thankfully, this continues throughout 2019 but takes a more beach-, surf-inspired look. Don’t be shocked to see people donning cycling shorts as these are really starting to come to the forefront. Simply team them with an oversized T-shirt or shirt à la Jacquemus or a boxy blazer and you’re good to go.
Finally, a slightly outlandish trend to watch out for is neon. With a nod back to the 80s, this in-your-face trend focuses on fluorescent shades of pink, yellow, orange and green and comes in lace, satin and cotton styles. You’ll see many high-street stores offering key neon pieces which makes it a little easier for you to get to grips with this somewhat daunting but surprisingly wearable style.
