How to Style a Slip Dress in Autumn

Summer may be over but slip dresses are just heating up

It seems as though it was just yesterday we were hanging up our slip dresses, moving on to the next ‘It’ dress (wrap dresses as it were) but with barely a season’s rest, the slip dress is back and eager to regain its spot as the dress of the season.

At this stage, it would be fair to say that the slip dress has surpassed trend status and become a wardrobe staple given our affinity for them but this season, in particular, saw them return to the runways in style. But how does one wear something so intrinsically summery in autumn and winter?

Lending itself to any and every occasion, Stella McCartney’s method of styling was over tailored trousers making the look suitable for eveningwear while Paco Rabanne juxtaposed the glamour of the slip with another of this season’s trends; wearing not one but two jackets layered on top. The most wearable option, however, comes from Nina Ricci who took the classic approach of layering a knee-grazing midi over a thin polo neck jumper teamed with knee-high boots.

Meanwhile on the streets, the styling is simplified but no less inspiring, teamed with chunky knits and even chunkier trainers, or with an oversized blazer thrown on top as seen on some of our favourite fashion bloggers Lucy Williams, Lindsey Holland and Emili Sindlev below.

If you haven’t already, now is as good a time as any to invest in a slip dress or two as this particular style of dress will only be bigger next season if the spring/summer 2019 shows are any indicator…and if you think they’re not for you, you simply haven’t found the one.
