Editor of maven46, Tanya Grimson, welcomed an audience into her dream closet at the fourth instalment of Diet Coke’s ‘Because I Can’ series. As a platform to encourage all people to live can-didly (see what I did there?), Grimson’s styling session offered insight into the new season trends that embody the same overarching theme of individuality, confidence and creativity as Diet Coke. Accompanied by TV presenter Darren Kennedy, the duo showcased unique pieces—curated from designers like Isabel Marant and Acne Studios as well as high street brands such as & Other Stories and River Island—talked inspiration, and encouraged the audience to buy even more animal print—which I assure you, did not take much persuasion.
So, which trends will be setting up camp in retail spaces this autumn/winter? Expect to see structured shoulder pads (cue: Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now), leather and tweed, wild west inspired detailing—horses not included—bold animal prints, and checkered two pieces straight from a Cher Horowitz shopping spree. Already evoking a loud voice on their own, Grimson urged the audience manipulate each trend by extracting only elements from the mainstream—be it a silhouette, a pattern, a buckle—and injecting that distinctive twist that’ll make people say, “Yeah, I’ve seen that before– but she does it so much better.” Much like Diet Coke, great style is not about how well you can follow rules, but instead how well you can break them. Why? Well, nobody wants to show up to the party in the same leather pants as their frenemy—and, also, because you can! Duh!
Feeling inspired yet? If so, and we hope you are, follow along with Diet Coke’s next ‘Because I Can’ event Before Brunch live podcast coming soon. Put on your flirtiest dress (in, may I suggest, zebra print?) and make yourselves comfortable because with any luck, there will be Diet Coke infused French toast…or waffles! Or pancakes! And that’s the kind of creative appetite I think everybody has a taste for.
