If Instagram is to be believed, gold jewellery is in and anything silver can just be forgotten about. No matter how deep you scroll or which blogger you follow, everything that glitters is gold.

To say that gold jewellery is a trend, however, would be redundant; gold has been more popular than silver for the past several seasons and will continue to be so for autumn/winter. Just one look at high fashion retailers such as Net-a-Porter, which currently stocks approximately 200 silver pieces of jewellery in comparison to an eye-catching 1600 gold items, confirms this.

Of these 1600 products, there are two styles that dominate – hoop earrings and medallions. Two trends that have the potential to fall into the category of “naff” but in the right shade of gold, and with the right touch, they become this season’s (and Instagram’s) must-have accessory.

Discover the independent jewellery brands that are getting it right this season plus our top buys below.

Alighieri is a London-based brand founded by Rosh Mahtani in 2014. Finding inspiration in the literature she studied at university, the entire collection of jewellery is based upon the works of poet Dante Alighieri. Using a mix of 24k gold-plated bronze and freshwater pearls, this collection has a distinctive “imperfect” look which you no doubt will have come across on Instagram worn by the likes of Olivia Wilde, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Laura Jackson, to name but a few (of which there are many). If you’re looking for that perfect(ly imperfect) gold medallion that you will treasure for years to come then Alighieri is one worth investing in.

You’ll most likely recognise these gold necklaces and rings from the posts of Instagram’s most stylish. A favourite among fashion bloggers, Missoma jewellery has commandeered the gold medallion trend thanks to its Roman coin-inspired collection made in collaboration with fashion blogger Lucy Williams who wears her own designs with finesse. Take your cues from Williams’ Instagram page if you’re looking for styling tips on how to layer your gold chains like a pro.

Nalin Studios

With a limited edition design launching every month, Dutch brand Nalin Studios takes an unusual approach to retail; one new style, which could be a necklace, a bracelet, a ring, is released monthly at 7 pm on a specified date, with a countdown clock on-site revealing when. These handmade pendants are characterised by their vintage coin-like appearance and artistic engravings worn by the likes of Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine.

Wald Berlin

If you’re looking to get in on the current seashell jewellery trend then Wald Berlin is a good place to visit. Popularised internationally by Camille Charrière and her fellow Instagram set, the brand’s Drop It Like It’s Hot necklace has become a best-seller seen around the necks of anyone who’s anyone (even French actress Marion Cotillard).

For fans of the zodiac, Reliquia’s collection of gold-filled necklaces are the perfect accessory to compliment your star sign. The regally ornate designs are something you might expect to find in your grandmother’s jewellery box (or on your favourite Instagrammer).

Regina George might have claimed hoop earrings as “her thing” but this season, hoops are for everyone. Gold hoops are, by and large, the biggest earring trend of 2018 but finding the ideal pair can prove tricky. Big, chunky styles are the choice du jour which can easily look tacky in the wrong shade of gold or incorrect size. LA line Bagatiba’s collection of sustainably made gold hoops gets it oh so right even Bella Hadid owns a pair. The search for the perfect gold hoops is over.
