Who likes short shorts? Not us, anyway, as this season sees hemlines dip a little lower and waistbands get a little higher. SS18 marks the return of Bermuda shorts in all their knee-length glory while the shorts suit is here to reignite your summer workwear.
Thankfully, for those of us not blessed with statuesque model pins, this season’s styles are more forgiving than the OG denim cut-offs with looser cuts and longer lengths making them the perfect alternative to the mini skirt this summer. Discover how to style and shop them below.
Similar to culottes but with a sportier vibe, Bermuda shorts are this season’s most unexpected trend. Rethink their casual sensibility and awkward length by teaming with a silky camisole top or blouse and midi sandals to dress them up.
Wondering how to make shorts work for work? Take your cues from the ’80s and welcome the shorts suit (back) into your wardrobe. When teamed with last season’s blazer, the right pair of shorts is transformed from beachwear to officewear; the key is in the cut. Opt for tailored, high-waisted styles with a wide-cut hem in materials such as linen or heavy cotton and combine with a matching blazer. A neutral colour palette works best here.
The most flattering of all the styles, shorts with a paper bag waist will make your waist look smaller and your legs appear longer – what more could you ask for? Also good for work, pair them with a shirt or blouse to make them look more formal or a T-shirt for casual days.
The most casual of this season’s trend, runner shorts are an off-duty go-to. Despite the name, these aren’t just for exercising in; their elasticated waists are made for comfort. Pair them with your favourite tee, a denim jacket and slides or find a coordinating printed shirt for a combo look.
