What’s wrong with kitten heels? They’re comfortable, they’re practical, and despite the ongoing debate, they’re stylish. While some may dispute this, even ridicule them, the likes of Prada, Miu Miu and Balenciaga have all waged their bets on the kitten heel being the shoe of the summer.
For those occasions when neither stilettos or flats will suffice, the kitten heel stands tall (metaphorically, of course). Lighter than trainers but comfier than just about everything above 1.75 inches, it’s the perfect in-between shoe to see you through the warmer months in style.
Playful and sleek, this season’s styles are classic in shape but with added oomph. What they lack in height they make up for in statement-making design; shocking pink, clashing prints, bejewelled and bedazzled. If you’re looking for an updated silhouette in place of the characteristic slingbacks, take your cues from Balenciaga whose satin backless mules have become an Instagram sensation or Loewe’s sculptural egg heel that will make you look twice. Team them with straight leg jeans and a slogan tee but leave the pencil skirt at home.
Though they caused a stir when they first made their return a year ago, fashion’s renewed love affair with the micro heel has not waned over the past couple of seasons. Quite the opposite in fact as the high street and high end alike have become inundated with styles for every taste. Much like skinny jeans, naysayers may have laughed this off as a passing fad but kitten heels are going nowhere anytime soon. This is one particular trend with staying power. Will you be wearing them?
