The Evolution of Selena Gomez’s Style

How the pop star became a style icon

Far from her days on the Disney Channel, Selena Gomez graces the brief list of child stars who successfully transitioned from teen icon to the A-list. Albeit, it took her some time to find her stride but from the moment she began working with stylist Kate Young her fate as a bona fide style maven was sealed.

As the most powerful stylist in Hollywood according to The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual list, Kate Young’s roster of clients is a who’s who of Hollywood stars from Margot Robbie and Natalie Portman to Sienna Miller and Dakota Johnson. Young’s ability to transform a celebrity (whether up-and-coming or established) into a fashion icon is unrivalled, case in point: Selena Gomez.

Though she made occasional appearances on the best dressed list, Selena Gomez’s style was undefined and a little lacklustre before enlisting Young as her stylist. Then came the red mini dress by Christian Dior (chosen by Young) which she wore to the premiere of Rudderless and everything changed. A departure from her previous red carpet looks, it introduced Selena to a sleeker, more sophisticated wardrobe full of leather, floral dresses and sharp tailoring that has made her a regular on the best dressed list.

That was in 2014 but the past year has seen Selena’s style evolve even further. Whether she’s attending fashion week or strolling around Los Angeles her outfit choices are oh so good. The dinosaur sweater and high waisted jeans combo firmly stands as one of the best looks of 2017.

These sartorial hits of course haven’t gone unnoticed; Kate Young’s transformative powers changed the fashion industry’s perspective of Selena. Once a Disney princess, now a fashionista worthy of a Louis Vuitton campaign and a partnership with Coach which will see her co-design her first ready-to-wear collection this year alongside Creative Director Stuart Vevers.

With the recent news that the singer has also turned her hand to footwear for her latest fashion project as part of her partnership with Puma, designing a new trainer called the Phenom Lux which is set to launch in April, it seems Selena Gomez has the fashion world at her feet. Discover how she got there in the slideshow below.
