On Sunday, the red carpet turned to black for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards as Hollywood’s leading ladies stood together in protest against gender inequality and sexual misconduct in the workplace. What is normally a sea of colour was at once unified by the unanimous decision to wear black and only black in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations.
The fashion protest, which characterises a sombre but changing time in Hollywood, is a part of a larger movement titled Time’s Up which aims to use the privilege, influence and wealth of Hollywood actresses to help working class women who are suffering from inequality in their workplace by providing access to lawyers and money.
With stars such as Jessica Chastain, Natalie Portman and Oprah Winfrey who last night became the first black woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award joining the cause, is a new era of Hollywood rising? One can only hope.
