The Nineties Accessory That Is Making A Comeback

Is the nation still divided?

It’s versatile, it’s practical, it’s controversial, but nevertheless, the bum bag is back. This time around though, it’s cooler and more refined than its Nineties predecessor and all notions of ‘tourist on holiday’ are gone.

The notoriously unstylish accessory has undergone a high fashion makeover, priming it for ‘It’ bag status. Indeed, a whole host of brands incorporated the bag in their Spring/Summer collections such as Zimmermann, Prada, Sportmax, and of course, Gucci who has been championing the return of the retro style with its best-selling monogrammed Marmont belt bag – that’s the thing you need to note about this new generation of bum bags; they’re called ‘belt bags’ now.

Sleek and contemporary, the ‘new’ name comes from their multifaceted (and economical) design feature. Most styles can be fashioned around the waist as intended or they can be worn separately as a belt and clutch/purse like & Other Stories studded leather belt bag and the COS pocket bag.

But how to wear the bum bag belt bag in 2018? Let us count the ways…

Shun the norm and style yours cross-body like Camille Charrière above. It’s how all the cool kids are doing it these days.

Place it high on the waist as Gucci intended.

Create your own belt bag by attaching last year’s micro bag trend to your favourite belt.

Still not convinced by its hands-free prowess? Throw it over your shoulder and go.
