Looking to hit up the gym this year but don’t know where to start? The world of fitness can be an intimidating place when you’re looking from the outside in but it’s January and you can’t let your ‘New Year, New You’ guise down just yet. How else are you going to demolish those extra pounds that Christmas ever faithfully bestowed on you? Yes, motivation can be hard to find in the dark and dreary mornings before work and the even darker evenings that greet you afterwards but it’s certainly an awful lot more inviting when you’re kitted out in new gym gear.

This year, make it your goal to test out a fitness trend you’ve never tried before – as you’ll see below, there’s plenty to whet your appetite – but make sure you do it in style with our activewear guide. Who knows, you might just find the ‘new you’ in the corner of a boxing ring.

According to the annual Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends done by the American College of Sport’s Medicine, HIIT (that’s high-intensity interval training) will make a return to the top spot as the number one trend this year. As the name suggests, this form of training involves short but intense bursts of exercise where you give it 110%, followed by a short period of rest. Of course, it’s by no means an easy workout but the good news is that it keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat and calories over a shorter period of time than regular aerobic exercise which is certainly something we can get onboard with.

Sweat it out in a pair of quick-drying, sweat-wicking leggings from Sweaty Betty to keep you looking cooler for longer – did we mention they’re bum-sculpting? – and Nike Air Zoom trainers to support your feet through the most intense workouts.

If you’ve ever wanted to run away and join the circus then here’s your chance. Aerial classes have been popping up all over the place as more and more fall for the graceful combination of airborne dance and athleticism. While you don’t have to be particularly strong to attend an aerial fitness class, you’ll certainly develop a firm core and lean limbs after all the climbing and pull-ups!

This is one particular workout that you won’t need shoes for, however, a long sleeved top and form-fitting leggings are key for mobility. Top it all off with a stretchy headband like a Totême woman and keep your hair off your face.

The Hadid sisters have a lot to answer for when it comes to our current love affair with this fitness trend. What was once considered a man’s sport is now fair game, making boxing a big trend for 2018. If you’re looking for toned and lean arms and legs then the boxing ring is a good place to start.

Combine your uppercut with activewear that works as hard as you do; this New Balance combo serves to keep you dry and cool against any opponent.

Group Training

This year there’s more reason than ever to find a gym buddy as group training is predicted to be the second biggest fitness trend of 2018. Exercising in a group of friends or peers brings a fun, social element to working out, not to mention the added encouragement as you spur one another on. Plus, it’s cheaper than personal training.

Enough about exercise, let’s talk recovery. Cryotherapy is fast gaining popularity as a post-workout treatment which is said to speed up muscle recovery and reduce inflammation as the sub-zero temperatures briefly freeze the surface of the skin. Brr. Grab your cosiest dressing gown to keep you warm afterwards.
