As one of the most prestigious fashion events of the year, an invitation to the Met Gala, which traditionally takes place annually on the 1st May, is highly coveted among the fashion elite. An invite confirms your style credentials within the fashion industry, whether you’re an A-list singer or the most sought after designer. For 2017, the theme of the event and proceeding exhibition is centred around Rei Kawakubo, the designer behind Comme des Garcons.
The exhibit is said to feature approx 120 womenswear designs from the Comme des Garcons archives, dating back to 1981 when Kawakubo debuted her first runway collection for the label. Kawakubo is regarded as one of the most influential designers of our time, with her designs often pushing boundaries of what is considered fashion, or fashionable. As the gala goes, those attending are required to dress in accordance with the theme so you can only imagine the outlandish outfits that will walk the red carpet, vying for Anna Wintour’s approval which so rarely comes on the night.
As such, we’re delving into the archives of Kawakubo’s most striking designs and highlighting what we think stars like Rihanna and Lady Gaga (those not afraid to make a statement) will walk the red carpet in next Monday- or find divine inspiration in.
What do you expect to see on the red carpet?
