Looking at the new season trends which have started to drift into store it’s easy to see what’s going to be on everyone’s shoulders come March and it looks decidedly denim.
Denim is a wardrobe staple that never truly goes out of fashion. Of course, the trends that dictate what’s hot and what’s not have a say in which denim item we covet from season to season, but regardless of whether it’s a midi skirt or white jeans, there’s always an element of denim. And for the upcoming spring/summer seasons, it’s the denim jacket’s turn (or return) under the spotlight.
Finally, you can ditch (or temporarily replace) your bomber jacket and dust off your ’90s favourite because the denim jacket is once again enjoying a renaissance thanks to the SS17 catwalk shows. Worn oversized and faded, everyone from Vetements and Topshop Unique to Alexander Wang and Gucci are championing the jean jacket as the outerwear to sport for spring.
With key updates such as embellishment, slogan emblazoning and patchwork detailing, it’s all about customising your denim jacket and wearing it loud and proud, preferably with some form of politically-fueled or tongue in cheek saying on the back.
Team it with leather pants for an indisputably edgy look or take style notes from Dakota Johnson and balance the femininity of a floral dress with a studded light wash jacket. For times when you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, take your inspiration from these ’90s It girls who knew how to rock a denim jacket during their grunge heydays with head-to-toe blue jean looks. Whatever your style persona, this piece is the perfect transitional jacket to take you out of the depths of winter into the warmth of summer.
