As the festive season hits, the search for not only the perfect gift but also the perfect party outfit is paramount. Of course, glittering bodycon mini dresses have become synonymous with this holiday period. So much so that they hijack our favourite stores from November 1st and show no sign of easing up on the racks until long after the Christmas tree has shed its final pin. But in 2016, the year that personal style shone through as the biggest trend of them all, say no to the dress.
For some, shimmering sequins and superfluous feathers seem more suited to Halloween than to Christmas. If you wouldn’t normally squeeze into a sequinned dress any other time of year then don’t relent this season. Stay true to your sartorial persona because there are many, many other worthy options out there to be worn.
The tuxedo has long been considered the perfect remedy for those allergic to the commonplace Christmas party dress. This winter, opt for the power suit in decadent fabrics such as velvet for an altogether luxurious and effectual outfit. Team with a slogan tee underneath or a daring lace bralet.
Christmas parties can be uncomfortable affairs so lessen the confines with pyjamawear. To avoid looking as though you just rolled out of bed, select a shirt and matching pants in velvet or silk (leave the cotton under your pillow) and keep your hair smooth and sleek. Style with open toe sandals and a bejewelled clutch to finish.
What could be sultrier for cocktail hour? The bustier made a fashionable return this season and expect to see it thriving come spring. Pair with high-waisted trousers for a sophisticated look a la Victoria Beckham or for more demure styling, wear yours over a crisp shirt.
