By 1905, women could finally wear a suit without scandalising the nation. With its empowering style and genderless guise the allure prevails and therefore it comes as no surprise that this renowned two-piece is back on the catwalks this season, a season of defiance and gender free roles in fashion providing us with the strongest of silhouettes to suit.

The beauty of buying a pantsuit is its winning ability to give you a sense of empowerment, not to mention making you appear taller and slimmer. Gone are the days of boring, stiff corporate suits that make you feel utterly drab, the future of tailored tuxedos going forward looks bright. Taking out cue from iconic trouser suit wears such as Grace Jones, legendary queen of how to work a co-ord broke fashion moulds with her angular and fierce androgynous take on the classic staple, whilst Yves Saint Laurent first showcased his now infamous tuxedo in 1966 as part of his ‘Pop collection’.  Thankfully designers have emulated the fearless and beguilingly sexy look for the season to come, adding a little sassiness but accessible touches for the masses.

Choosing the right suit should accentuate all the right areas and make you feel like you can take over the world. Stepping into a slimming pantsuit should make you feel organised whether you are or not, this is a fool-proof disguise of reassuring yourself and others that you are in control, no wonder why women in politics are opting for the tailored look.

Many women fall into the pit of obtaining ill-fitted styles and poor quality fabrics which, lets face it aren’t doing anyone justice. Unlike your trusted pair of jeans, having an outdated style will just not suffice.  Luckily for you there is no shortage of silhouettes this season so no excuses. If you want to update the look the ‘AW2016’ way look for oversize shoulders, long lapels and elongated trousers in velvet or pajama styled fabrics to really optimise this look and bring it from day to night.

Peruse our guide of how to work a power suit below to gain expert knowledge and inspiration on the effortlessly tailored two-piece.

Slogan Tee

Shout about the latest tailored trend with a slogan a t-shirt in tow. Pairing one with a suit will instantly tone down the overall look, if you are aiming for a more laid back approach that is.

Pajama prints

If you are looking for a fun, quirky adaptation of the trend look no further. Donning a PJ co-ord will make getting dressed seem like less of a chore. Pair with a neutral tee or a plain knit to avoid an over-kill of prints.

Relaxed silhouette

Embrace laidback luxe with a flowing, belted silhouette.  With its ability to bring you from work to play, this comfortably chic number is one to add to the capsule. Opt for silky or satin fabrics to optimise the luxurious flowy feel.

Velvet Pairings

If the cold mornings are getting the better of you, suit up in one the seasons must have fabrics. Pair the luxurious fabric with an oversized shirt or leather loafers to counteract an over luxe look.

Heritage check is the new black

Move over Black, you have been replaced with an updated classic. Replace harsh inky hues with a highland inspired fabric. Combine a heeled mule to accommodate after-work drink dates.

The versatile roll-neck

If in doubt pull on a polo-neck underneath your tailored co-ord to set the look. If you really want to be ahead of the curve, update with a half zip knit to keep you ahead of the pack.
