With dull weather comes a tendency to dress in dull colours. Our colder season clothes tend to be in plain hues of black, grey, navy and brown reflecting the dreary colour palette we see in the skies. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Instead, why not look to the opposite of season-ready shades? AW16 saw designers send bright flashes of colour down the runway in the form of winter coats, this season a colourful coat could be just the thing to brighten up your wardrobe. Primary colours of blues, yellows and reds will get you noticed while paler pinks are a more subtle introduction to the colour pop trend.
If you’re going for a bright coloured coat keep the silhouette slim and fitted, if only to avoid any potential similarities to large children’s characters (yes, we’re looking at you Barney and Big Bird) but also allowing for bundles of winter layers underneath. Ease yourself into this vibrant trend by keeping your brightly hued coat the focal point of your outfit, allowing your statement piece to shine. This also means that you can still wear the rest of your current black/grey/navy/brown winter wardrobe underneath while adding a new, interesting element to your perhaps otherwise lacklustre outfits. But if you’re feeling a bit more daring, pair your bright coat with a complimentary colour block outfit; pale pink with emerald green, electric blue with burnt orange or fiery red with canary yellow, the most imaginative of combinations will make for an alluringly vibrant look.
Whether you’re going for eye-catching colour block or a subtle hint at the colour pop trend, winter coats are available in all the colours of the rainbow this season. If this trend isn’t for you take a look back at the rest of the styles in our AW16 coats guide, we’ve been through heritage check, military, puffer and shearling this week so you’re sure to find something special to suit your taste.
We’ve compiled the best selection of high-street, mid-market and high-end coats that are tapping into this season’s colour pop trend. Shop the story below and don’t forget to catch up on the previous four styles in our AW16 coat edit.
