Alex Stedman is a fashion stylist and art director living in London; she is also the Editor of The Frugality, a blog which chronicles her personal style, travel diaries and frugal purchases from the high street. Read on as Alex tells us how she made her way in the fashion industry, her inspirations and the places she’d love to live.

On work life…

No day is ever the same (and never 9-5!). Today, for instance, I went to a press day to see a denim brand’s new collection at 8:30 am, had a meeting with Pinterest at 9 am, 10:30 am I went to Marks & Spencer to pull some pieces for a post I am working on with the brand next week, accidentally stumbled into Mango and bought some clothes for Paris Fashion Week, went home for two hours, updated some content on my site that is due to go live tomorrow, got dressed and packed my bag and now I’m on my way to Manchester to do a talk at the Vogue 100 exhibition. I’ll probably get home at around 11:30 pm…

That’s an average day for me at the moment!

On perfect downtime…

Sleeping! I haven’t had as many days off as I would like with fashion week etc. but lounging for as long as possible in my pyjamas is a must. I go to a lot of restaurants and events for work so I don’t crave the latest place for dinner or drinks, I much prefer to potter around at home and relax.

On making her way in fashion…

I interned throughout university at magazines and press offices and then after uni, Company magazine recommended me to work at Matches Fashion as the PR, which I did for two years. But I still loved magazines, and one day an editor came in from Eve magazine and told me they were looking for an assistant so I asked if I could meet the Fashion Director. That was my first job in print ten years ago and we are still friends today.

On career advice…

Always be nice to everyone on the way up because you’ll never know who you’ll see on the way down…

On inspirations…

I’m a bit of a cultural sponge, I take inspiration from anywhere – the Tube, what people are wearing on the street, ads, magazines, films, galleries. I love Tate Britain, it’s my happy place.

On the essential piece of clothing…

Jeans. They just go with everything.

On AW16 trends to try…

I am loving the ease of a midi dress or pleated skirt. I’m wearing with trainers in the day and a block heel for events. They both have a lot of scope.

On high street vs high end…

I love the high street; we take for granted how good our stores are. Some of my best coatsjackets and shoes have been bargains.

On her go-to stores…

I love H&M on the high street for always being cutting edge. And I love the experience of Net-a-Porter even if I have only bought a few things from there!

On her favourite travel destinations…

Japan. It’s just the most diverse, interesting, and visually stunning place I have ever been.

On travel essentials…

I have become one of ‘those’ people that take their essential beauty products on a flight- it’s from doing so much long-haul flying as a stylist. Lano hand cream, Caudalie Beauty Elixir in the mini size to feel fresh and cool, and Shiseido Smoothing Eye Mask to diminish puffiness before you get off. It makes that economy seat feel a bit more special!

On her dream living situations…

Tokyo or New York… I like fast paced city life. I am always switched on and need to live somewhere that reflects that. I just came back from New York Fashion Week and loved it.
