Box-fresh trainers and midi heels which we previously shunned have long been our go-to kicks for the past couple of seasons. So long, in fact, we’d forgotten that other styles existed and the sales of trainers reached record highs. It would be a hard find to locate a street style shot that didn’t include a fashion girl strutting about in a pair of Stan Smiths. But the trends are shifting for autumn/winter, at long last we sigh, and new (old) styles are the shoes de rigueur. Find out which kicks are making a fashionable return and should be on your feet this autumn below.

Sock boots

Bridging the gap we never knew needed bridging, as the name suggests, the sock boot resembles a sock in shape and fit. While Vetements paved the way for SS16 with its version that looks exactly like a pair of sports socks with a stiletto heel attached (see above), thankfully, other designers such as Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim have created less “Vetements-y”, more wearable versions for autumn i.e. ones that don’t look like tube socks, they merely fit like them. If you’re questioning why you should start wearing such a thing, the answer is comfort, and also, why not? Fashion is meant to be fun. The sock boot is the most flattering ankle boot you could ever dream of. Where most ankle boots can leave your legs looking short and cut off, the sock boot is slim fitting and works to elongate the legs which is always appreciated.

This sumptuous fabric isn’t refined to wide leg trousers and dresses, this season your feet are in for a slice of luxury too. From loafers to Mary Janes and ankle boots, velvet is all over. Style a pair of velvet ankle boots with a vinyl (another key material for autumn/winter) mini skirt for a trending look.

With a little help from the house of Gucci loafers are the most popular shoe of 2016 so far, excluding those that fall under the category of sportswear of course, and they won’t be disappearing anytime soon. If you have yet to snag yourself a pair, do so now. If you find yourself already with three pairs in varying shades of black but have the urge for a brand spanking new pair for autumn, opt for a platform or heeled version for a fresh update.

Biker Boots

Time to unleash your inner punk and stomp about town in this season’s biker boots which littered the catwalks from Prada to Valentino. The chunkier the better. Offset the boots’ edgy vibes by teaming them with a romantic lace dress or go full punk with skinny jeans and a biker jacket – the perfect model-off-duty look.

They were on hiatus for quite some time but for autumn, the thin skyscraper heel is back with force. While she may have descended to lower heel heights of late, a stiletto is still Victoria Beckham‘s shoe of choice and for good reason. Stilettos instil confidence in the wearer, causing the hips the sway and, unless you truly can’t walk a foot in them, they add sex appeal. We’re not saying throw away your midi block heels just yet, there’s a time and place for them, but if you invest in one pair of heels this season, make it a stiletto.

Are you prepared to take a step back from your trainers? Fear not, sneakerheads, if the answer is no. While there may be new styles on rotation, trainers have made such an impact on our wardrobes ever since Creative Director for Céline, Phoebe Philo sported a pair after the AW11 catwalk show that they will no doubt go down the same route as skinny jeans- they may not be on trend but they’ll always be in fashion.
