Film has always been one of the most captivating mediums. As well as being creatively inspiring and entertaining, it can also be a source of education when it comes to style. When the worlds of film and style converge you are left with a piece of work that can almost transcend time, allowing you to enter into this aspirational dream at any moment.

Before the days of Instagram and Pinterest and street style photography, there was film. From high school hit Clueless that defined the ’90s right back to Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and their contemporaries during Hollywood’s Golden Age. The glamour that stemmed from Old Hollywood, specifically in the 1950s and 1960s, is something that has, and continues, to inspire us all.

This summer we’re taking inspiration from our favourite film characters from decades past right up to present day. It seems the glamour of old Hollywood still remains, as on screen style is still one of the places we constantly look to for fashion inspiration even in the midst of all the oversaturated social media networks. From 1960 to 2016 these are some of the timeless outfits that are as fashionable now as they were when they were first worn by the stars on screen. We’ve compiled a list of the most stylish on screen stars and recreated some of their most iconic outfits, adding a modern twist to each making them even more wearable for this summer.

La Piscine (1969)

Add a high low hem to your gingham skirt of choice for a modern twist on this look from La Piscine. The Gucci belt will also add an on trend touch- it is the label on everyone’s lips this season. If you’re on holiday this is an outfit that will work from day to night, and if you’re at home simply swap accessories around and the look will work just as well.

Breathless (A Bout de Souffle, 1960)

The definition of Gamine; from her pixie haircut to a wardrobe of breton tops, chinos and ballet flats, Jean Seberg’s look in French New Wave film Breathless has now become iconic. This outfit is simple yet sophisticated in style. For the ultimate French chic look, pair a breton top with straight leg jeans or trousers and some flat shoes or loafers.

The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)

While you may want to steal style inspiration from the boys, Jude Law and Matt Damon, who offer up ultimate Riviera inspired sartorial vibes, Gwyneth Paltrow has some beautiful summer looks of her own in this film. An easy breezy outfit made up of a full midi skirt and waist-tied shirt is Gwyneth’s uniform throughout, and a straw tote bag and canvas espadrilles are a must to finish off this outfit. Be warned, you will most definitely want to book a trip to Italy after watching this film.

A Bigger Splash (2016)

Hailed as the must-see film of the year, A Bigger Splash which will be released later this summer, sees Tilda Swinton exude an effortless elegance throughout- with outfits by Dior, this is no surprise really. The costumes were designed in collaboration with Raf Simons, then Creative Director of the brand. This resulted in a collection of costumes that portrayed a nonchalant glamour, fitting for the scenic backdrop of Pantelleria, a beautiful island between Italy and North Africa. They even created a custom pair of this season’s must-have technologic sunglasses for Swinton, apparently in a bid to show the audience what her character is seeing through the use of the mirrored lenses.
