Ever wonder why floral prints come back into fashion every spring/summer? From oriental blossoms to begonia print, their ability to freshen up an outfit and make it stand out are timeless. Summer and florals go together perfectly, the botanical motif is ideal for those impromptu lunches in the park and after work cocktails. But like any print, florals stand out unabashedly and draw all attention, making it difficult to refresh an outfit and style it in various ways. Or so we thought.
With a new Creative Director at the helm in the form of Alessandro Michele, Gucci completely changed the way we wear florals by applying them unexpectedly to bomber jackets and track pants, digressing momentarily from the floaty dresses and allowing our inner eccentric have a moment in the spotlight. Whether big and beautiful or minuscule and abstract, the trick is to wear them with confidence and don’t let them wear you. Keep accessories to a minimum but as long as you dress with pride in your florals you can style yourself head to toe in the print, regardless of whether you’re a true girly girl or a tomboy at heart.
Valentino sent models down the runway for Fall 2017 in what only can be described as the Yin and Yang of florals; donning delicate floral dresses that were teamed with leather biker jackets. The edgy combo revamped flower print and gave it a tougher vibe than normal. If this is more your forte then opt for big prints in dark shades of khaki, maroon, and navy with a hint of dusty pink to break the look up.
Although it may be considered tricky to dress down such a bold print, we assure you it’s not difficult. Always choose something comfortable and wearable throughout the day- when you feel uncomfortable you look uncomfortable. We love the idea of styling a floral mini dress over a pair of boyfriend jeans while a silk camisole paired with a khaki shacket and rose embroidered denim turns the blooming fashion into a cool street style outfit. Slip into a pair of suede loafers for the ultimate relaxed daytime look.
Of course, while fashion may diverge from the path every now and then, the classically feminine way of wearing florals will always be trending. Update the look for 2016 by styling a cold shoulder midi dress with pointed kitten heels and dainty jewellery for a romantic feel. Stick to shades of white and pastel tones such as rose quartz, (Pantone’s 2016 Colour of the Year). This ruffled Topshop dress will update your wardrobe in an instant.
So whether you’re into them or over them, florals are always a summer staple. The key is to keep the flower print looking fun and fresh. How will you style yours?
