Steal VS Splurge: Top 5 Must Have Items for Summer

Can you tell the real deal from the dupe?

Each season a handful of items gain cult status with a blogger on every street corner styling them in their own unique and not so unique way. Of course, much like the blogger that’s wearing them, these ‘It’ items usually come with a hefty price tag in tow. Thankfully, when something is that coveted the high street usually listens and offers its own more affordable option. So, whether you’re a high street hero, couture maven or love a mix of both in your wardrobe, we’ve got an option for you.

Bucket bag

Spotted on the arms of everyone from Kirsten Dunst to Alessandra Ambrosio, the bucket bag has claimed its spot as this year’s bag to own. While Mansur Gavriel’s design is firmly on the lust list, Mango does an excellent version for a mere fraction of the price. But if it’s longevity you’re looking for we suggest investing in the original Mansur Gavriel, which is made from real leather and has major impact status. Fair warning though, this bag sells out time and time again so you will have to keep an eye out for it.

Backless loafers

These are the shoes of the summer and don’t be surprised if they’re still trending come autumn too (spoiler alert). If you invest in just one item from the SS16 collections we suggest you make it a pair of backless loafers. While Alessandro Michele’s Gucci loafers may be the shoes on everyone’s Instagram page, due to their popularity, the high street has made its own to please the masses and they don’t disappoint.

Off-the-shoulder poplin top

Next only to Gucci, Ellery is the most blogged about, worn-about brand of the season and the one that has spawned the most high street take offs. Their oversized tops have become easily recognised on the street but stores like Zara have done what they do best and started selling dupes if you’re not ready to invest in the real deal just yet.

Choker necklaces

Statement jewellery is making an impact this season but nothing more so than the choker. Yes, the necklace you thought was stuck firmly in the ’90s has made a comeback but this time it’s all grown up. While the tattoo style was a cult favourite, chokers have been given a luxe makeover for SS16 in decadent materials. Easily the most sought after style is a velvet band with some form of embellishment on it as seen on everyone from Taylor Swift and Alexa Chung to Jennifer Lawrence and Poppy Delevingne.

Pleated midi skirt

From Proenza Schouler to Loewe, a pleated midi skirt made its way down the runway at nearly every show but none made more of an impact this season than Gucci’s metallic number. It seems that everything Alessandro Michele touches turns to gold, or in this skirt’s case, silver- with the price tag to match. If you’re not quite willing to spend a small fortune on a trend piece then brands such as Topshop and Maje do great alternatives.
