With the sun shining and the temperatures finally rising, the urge to slip into something a little lighter and breezier than those well-worn pair of trainers is strong. Indeed, summer and sandals go hand in hand. But fashion has come a long way since the flip-flops, or thongs as you might call them, you used to slip on as a child. Keep reading to find out the biggest shoe trends for summer ’16 that will replace your blister inducing thongs.
The ‘ugly shoe’ is back again. This time it’s all about the mule which graced the feet of many a model throughout the spring/summer shows. These backless slip-ons are the shoe of the summer with both designers and every high street store offering their take on the trend. Whether you opt for the classic style as seen at Balenciaga, something with a heel or you prefer the backless loafer version given cult status by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, a pair of mules is a must-have for summer. Style them with anything from your favourite pair of skinnies to cropped kick flares or a pleated midi skirt– both perfect for day and night. However, some styles can be hard to keep on your feet so take a long stroll around the store before committing to purchase. But these shoes are talking points, real head turners in the fashion circles, so think of them like you would your favourite high heel and take them out when you know you don’t have too far to walk. It will be worth it.
Don’t take this name too literally- you can wear your slides to more than just the pool. Just look at Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen who were rocking these long before it was a trend- and not just to the pool. Go classic with a sporty pair of Nike slides or go luxe with a cross-strapped leather style. Wear them with socks for the ultimate hipster declaration or dress them up with culottes for a more refined and sophisticated look. Casual footwear at its finest.
