It may be ‘summertime’, but the corresponding weather has yet to rear its head. Of course, when you live in Ireland, the UK and many parts of Europe, “summer” doesn’t always mean endless weeks of sunshine and warmer temperatures. Sometimes, summer just means the rain gets warmer. So, while we may wish endlessly for days where we can adopt bare legs and slip into a dress and little else, sometimes a jacket is necessary.
While you can’t ignore the omnipresent bomber jacket, which is in serious jeopardy of becoming old before its time due to over saturation in the market, thankfully, there are other options available. Lightweight choices such as the utilitarian military jacket, bohemian trophy jackets and dusters are the perfect cover up- and they’re straight off the SS16 catwalks.
Get ahead of the trends with this one. Sported as the ‘It’ jacket for autumn/winter, a military jacket is also the perfect outerwear for the summer months. Styled over a slip dress can create a look that’s both feminine and edgy, or you could go monochromatic and pair with khaki coloured culottes. The military jacket is your oyster.
We love it when our fashion choices can also be practical and none more so than the raincoat. While they hit the runway for both SS16 and AW16, it’s truly festival fashion that is making water repellent parkas a trend rather than the catwalks. With summer being prime festival season, the high street is currently full of low cost offerings in a rainbow of colours with canary yellow being the obvious winner to brighten up a rainy day. Or you can follow Céline’s lead with a smart and sophisticated beige option.
We touted this as the coat to wear for spring, but a duster is just right for summer too. Sleeved or sleeveless, this versatile piece is the perfect final layer for breezy summer days and one that will take you from day straight through to those unplanned nights out.
You don’t always need statement jewellery to make an impact with your outfit. A trophy jacket says it all for you, and right now the high street is full of them (we’re looking at you, Primark). With its cropped length and box-like structure, a trophy jacket is flattering on all. Whether you opt for the bold and embellished or an embroidered boho style, just make sure the rest of your outfit is kept clean and let your jacket do all the work.
Of course, no list would be complete without the bomber jacket. The star of SS16 shows no sign of going out of fashion any time soon so if you haven’t already purchased one, now is definitely the time to do so. While the utilitarian MA1 style jacket was popular last season in dark shades of navy and khaki, for summer it’s all about luxe satin fabrics with detailed embroidery in fresh and vibrant colours as seen at Gucci and on the backs of almost every fashion blogger.
