There is no denying that the vegan lifestyle has risen in popularity over the past few years, with restaurants now offering separate vegan menus and supermarkets dedicating entire aisles to vegan produce. With its popularity soaring, it’s no surprise that many people are curious about the veganism and even thinking about making the change. That is where Veganuary comes in. Set up by a charity of the same name, Veganuary is meant to inspire people to test out veganism for the month of January and hopefully carry it on throughout the rest year. With a record of 250,000 people signed up, veganism is becoming more and more appealing to the masses.
Of course, veganism is by no means easy. There is so much thought and preparation that goes into it; as many will tell you, it’s not just about the food you eat but also about the clothes you wear and the products you use. When it comes to beauty, you have to be mindful about the brands you choose — just because a brand or product is labelled cruelty-free does not necessarily mean that it is vegan. Thankfully, today there are plenty of brands that are certified vegan and cruelty-free such as Irish brand Pestle & Mortar and budget brand Elf. Not to mention many brands that offer vegan-friendly ranges, for example, Lush who has its vegan-friendly range very clearly marked.
Naturally, it is millennials and Generation Z who are at the forefront of this vegan movement, with the hashtag ‘vegan’ coming in at 72.4 million on Instagram. With so many people now embracing the vegan lifestyle, it’s no wonder that the beauty industry is starting to change its ways to keep up with consumer demands. According to Mintel’s Global New Products Database (GNPD), vegan launches more than doubled in the past five years, growing by 175% from July 2013 to June 2018, confirming that the young consumers of today are more informed, making conscious decisions when it comes to purchasing beauty products.
As younger generations become more conscious consumers, companies are becoming more aware of the changes they need to make in order to keep competing in today’s market. We’ve comprised some of our favourite vegan-friendly products from all aspects of the beauty industry from makeup to haircare below.
