In today’s society where everyone is plugged in 24/7, it is no wonder most people don’t get enough sleep. But did you know that lack of sleep isn’t just leaving you with less energy, it also has a huge impact on your skin? Most of us don’t realise that the hours we spend asleep are actually among our most productive; when it comes to your skincare routine, sleep is a crucial component for the skin’s recovery from the assaults of the day. Lack of sleep results in dry and dull looking skin, causing redness, puffy eyes and everyone’s favourite dark undereye circles. Not to mention, chronic sleep deprivation will lead to early ageing. Studies have been conducted by the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Stockholm to see the effects on your face in relation to sleep deprivation. Their conclusion was that sleep-deprived people appeared to be less attractive and less healthy looking compared to when they were getting the correct amount of sleep. So, it turns out that ‘beauty sleep’ is not just a phrase, it is actually really important!

While our busy lives and ‘always on’ mentality might mean that we’re not able to get as much sleep as we would like, how do we combat all the negative effects lack of sleep has on our skin?

Here are three tips to incorporate into your nightly routine to help boost your skin’s overall health:

1/ Turn off all electronics before bed

Dr Rupert Critchley, who wrote about how sleep affects the skin, says that we should turn off all electronics (yes, even our phones!) thirty to forty minutes before bed so we don’t confuse the light-sensitive cells in our eyes and stop the production of the sleep-promoting hormone, melatonin. Not scrolling on your phone right before bed can help you unwind from a busy day and prepare you for a good nights rest.

2/ Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed

It’s no secret that caffeine before bed disrupts sleep but alcohol also prevents us from entering a deeper sleep and stops the regeneration of cells. This can jump-start the domino effect of crepey looking skin, a sallow complexion, and dryness. Instead, try sipping decaffeinated teas like chamomile or lemon and ginger.

3/ Have the right nighttime skincare routine

Sleep is crucial to overall skin health but so too is the right skincare regime. One product we can use to give our skin a little helping hand is Dermalogica’s new Sound Sleep Cocoon which is a revitalising gel-cream that works with the skin’s natural overnight repair and recovery process to optimise the skin benefits of the sleep we do get, delivering glowing skin by morning. Because skin is best able to absorb active ingredients at night, Sound Sleep Cocoon is formulated with essential oils to soothe the senses with aromatherapy and promote deep, restful sleep for healthier-looking skin.

Consisting of advanced ingredients that aid nighttime skin recovery, Sound Sleep Cocoon perfects your beauty sleep. There are essential oils with motion-activated technology encapsulated within the cream including French Lavender oil which provides a calming scent that is released while you massage the cream into your skin, alongside Sandalwood and Patchouli. It also includes Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract (Persian Silk Tree) to reduce signs of skin fatigue and restore vitality, Evodia Rutaecarpa Fruit Extract (Fruits of Wu-Zhu in traditional Chinese medicine) which provides visibly radiant skin by morning and promotes a more refined skin texture. Kakadu Plum Extract, which is rich in antioxidant Vitamin C, is clinically shown to improve and brighten skin tone while Tamarindus Indicia (Tamarind Seed Extract) cushions the skin, creating a nourishing cocoon of comfort for softer, more hydrated skin. What part of that doesn’t sound good?

All of these active ingredients are combined in a revolutionary push-pump jar, helping to create a brighter and more even skin tone and reduce the speed of ageing due to lack of sleep. Simply smooth over the face and neck as the last step in your skincare regime and let the product do the rest. Sound Sleep Cocoon can give you that “I woke up like this” healthy glow that everyone loves.

Bonus tip! To coincide with Sound Sleep Cocoon, Dermalogica along with Nucalm have created a binaural beats soundtrack that works in a way that relaxes your mind and prepares you for a deep, restful nights sleep. Binaural beats work by having two different sound frequencies play, along with a soothing background audio track. Your brain is able to hear the difference between these two frequencies and responds by quickly cycling to a state of deep relaxation. So, in other words, you fall asleep quicker! It is designed so that you do not necessarily need to use headphones to listen to it. Try it here tonight for relaxing, restorative sleep!
