We all want our skin to look its very best; that clear, healthy, wrinkle-free glow… YES, PLEASE! But when it doesn’t, we all reach for that ‘new wonder cream’ we saw on the TV or in a magazine — I think Beyoncé uses it, right? While, we can’t deny a good cleansing regime is very important to keep your skin looking its best, do we really have to put ourselves out of pocket to get it and will it fix all our problems?

As a makeup artist, I see different types of skin every day and I inspect my own on a daily basis. I mean, we all look in the mirror to make sure it’s looking good, don’t we?

Through my own struggles, I’ve looked for answers and I have tried and tested it all. As a result, I am a firm believer that we are what we eat and drink! If you ask any of my friends they will probably tell you I think ginger is the answer to everything! Got a cold? Ginger! Feeling sick? Ginger? Men driving you crazy… Ginger! Below you’ll find more of my top favourite foods for beautiful skin.

Lemons

So you’re having a breakout and it’s the lead up to a big event and you think damn, what can you do? The answer is lemons, yes, lemons! We’ve all had our elders tell us at some stage about the benefits of drinking hot water and lemon in the morning, but why? Lemons aid digestion and they help support your liver by secreting bile. Imagine your liver is like a sponge soaking up toxins from everyday life, over years and years — a tough job for anyone —, so any support here is going to help. As well as being high in vitamin C, lemons contain calcium, potassium and magnesium. They help cleanse your blood and even fight wrinkles. Pass me the lemons, please.

Onions

Onions are another natural food worth the tears — I actually have to wear goggles when I cut these bad boys! But they are like a natural antiseptic and help eliminate the bad stuff from our blood. Well worth it, cooked or raw.

Celery

Has anyone ever said to you, “hey you are looking a little tired”, and you think to yourself, yes, my eyeballs are hanging out of my head! Celery is the answer. Although I’ve never been a fan of the taste, since I discovered its benefits I will pop it into every juice, smoothie and soup that I can! Not only does it help flush out excess fluid from the body (think of those puffy tired eyes and maybe one too many coffees), celery supports your liver and is known to help with stress and anxiety.

Cabbage

Want to look young forever? You’re going to need a good dose of vitamin C! And not in the capsule variety but opt for cabbage instead. Its high content of vitamin C actually helps to heal damaged tissues, it even contains a higher amount of vitamin C than oranges by weight. It’s also a natural energy booster.

But really, when we stop and think about our bodies and our skin, it’s incredible; each organ has a specific job to keep us alive. Our bodies are built to tell us when there is something going wrong, we just need to stop and listen to it.

So instead of running to the cosmetic counter and spending a fortune on the new wonder beauty product that promised eternal youth, reach for the apple first to brighten your eyes or the sweet potato to glow from within!

And, remember beauty comes from the inside out.
