The solstice has officially marked the start of the season, which means pretty summer clothes, eating al fresco, and holidays – yay! But also with summer comes changes in heat, humidity, and UV exposure, so we’ve rounded up a few beauty products that you can include in your daily routine to help you style out the season.
We’ve all got different hair concerns, whether it’s shine, strength, or the search for seriously sleek locks. But whatever your hair type, one thing all of us are susceptible to is sun damage. Yes, just like your skin, your hair can burn in the sun. That dry crunchy feel after you’ve been out in the heat too long? It’s your hair’s way of asking for a little nourishment! Prevention is always better than cure, so consider an SPF for your hair such as Philip Kingsley Sun Shield which helps fight frizz whilst guarding hair against colour fade, dryness and damage caused by UV rays, chlorine and salt-water if you know you’ll be under the sun. And for after that beach holiday, or long weekend lounging outdoors, treat your tresses to a conditioning mask.
Speaking of SPF, if you’re not already applying one daily, it’s time to start. While some sun creams can leave a slimy layer, or a chalky sheen, there are so many more options than the greasy gloop you remember from childhood. Opt for mineral based lotions if you’ve got oily skin. The matte finish will keep your skin protected from both burn and a shiny T-zone. Minerals can also be good for sensitive skin, which can sometimes react to harsh chemicals in other formulas.
Even sun-protected skin can suffer during summer months. Air conditioning can lead to dry skin in need of a little TLC. Treat it to an extra dose of moisture, with either a potent serum or a boosted version of your daytime moisturiser. Hyaluronic Acid is having a moment, as an ingredient that has the miraculous ability to pull moisture from the air to continuously hydrate the skin throughout the day. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid is an oil-free treatment that penetrates deep into the skin’s layers to deliver intense, long-lasting moisture to keep skin plump and hydrated.
In the warmer weather, you may find that your go-to makeup just doesn’t cut it. Oil-based products can struggle to keep in place when the temps go up. One solution is to change to a mineral alternative. A powder foundation such as Eve Lom Mineral Powder can offer buildable coverage, offering the option to wear less makeup and let your skin breathe. And the oil-absorbing properties will help keep your face fresher for longer in the heat!
Of course, sunnier weather offers the opportunity to adopt that golden glow of sun-kissed skin. But since sun exposure is such a potential trigger for all sorts of nasty business (skin cancer, premature ageing, dehydration), we’d rather fake it! Thankfully that doesn’t have to mean managing the tricky business of fake tan. The market is full of gentle complexion enhancers such as Clarins Golden Glow Booster which you simply add to your day or night moisturiser, and promise a no-fuss approach to letting your inner glow come through.
