All about that base

If you haven’t been using a primer then today is the day to make the change. Many people skip this vital step in their beauty regime as they think it’s unnecessary, not worth the investment or are perhaps unaware of its magical powers.

Providing a base for your makeup is essential to its longevity – meaning no more disappearing acts half way through the night. If you are going to spend time contouring and strobing every inch of your face then you may as well make sure all your hard work is going to last. Priming is a definite way to achieve that dewy minimal look we all long for by helping create a perfect canvas for the foundation or BB cream to sit on. It can even be worn on its own as a beauty balm – giving your skin a nice natural luminosity on even the laziest of days.

Most brands have incorporated a primer into their beauty and makeup lines, so there is no need to break the bank whilst achieving this lustrous look. From oil-based bases to formulas for problematic skin, you will not fail to find one to suit.

We have shortlisted the best primers below to help you create your perfect base.

Laura Mercier Mineral Primer

This creamy lightweight formula helps keep skin well hydrated with its glycerin and aloe vera properties. This base is great for someone who has dry skin as its smoothes over rough patches helping create that perfect canvas.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

I’m sure you have seen this primer popping up before as it regularly makes the list as one of the top bases to buy. With its lightweight silky blend of vitamins that smooth over your skin and reduce the appearance of large pores and fine lines, it’s no wonder this cult product remains at the top. However, I will say that, in my opinion, if you are noticing your skin is quite dry this probably isn’t the primer for you as it can cling to dry patches creating an uneven appearance, so make sure your skin is nice and moisturised before application.

Catrice Prime and Fine Beautifying Primer

This lustrous base gives the skin an added luminosity with its soft shimmer and light reflecting pigments. At such a reasonable price you won’t go far wrong with this beautiful glowing option.

Cover up

With so many foundations, beauty creams, tinted moisturisers and primers inundating the market it is hard to differentiate unless you are a qualified make-up artist or an avid makeup devotee. So, as I am exploring the how to achieve a fresh no makeup look I decided to delve into the world of BB creams and barely-there foundations to see what all the fuss is about.

Firstly, I don’t know about you, but between CC, DD and BB standing before the word cream, I found myself feeling rather perplexed as to what the purpose is for each one. With that in mind, I’ll give you a quick rundown of what I learned from working as a model over the years (one of the many benefits of modelling is hearing the top beauty secrets from the MUAs working on us on set). So, a CC cream is for colour correcting and a DD is a dynamic do-all balm. But what I really wanted to know was, what actually is a BB cream?

Meaning beauty and blemish, this marvelous product works on the skin as a moisturiser, sunscreen, primer and all round skin treatment- it’s no wonder why they have proved so popular among the masses. These wonder balms first came on the scene a few years back, when a German Dermatologist wanted to create an all-in-one beauty camouflage to help cover and protect people who had undergone laser treatment. Since then, the popularity of the ‘miracle’ product has soared and has firmly taken the spot as one of the go-to products for achieving a minimal natural no makeup look.

This foundation is one of my personal favourites. It provides a lightweight dewy glow, yet leaves skin looking natural and refreshed. With its water based consistency and SPF of 15 it has the perfect combination for creating that no makeup look. Must-use multitaskers

I don’t know what it is, but I always find myself drawn to products that have more than just one purpose. Maybe it’s because they are extremely cost efficient or because they have the ability to be applied in different ways in a matter of minutes, either way, I cannot get enough of these versatile double-ups.

As people are leading such busy lives, beauty products should have the ability to work as hard as we do. When purchasing you should take a second to ponder on how you can get the most out of your makeup and how it is going to benefit your fast paced routine. From lipsticks doubling up as blushers and bronzers being cleverly used as an eye shadow, needless to say, the sky is the limit when it comes to multi-using your beauty products.

We have streamlined a few favourite multi-taskers below that will help you achieve that minimal look in no time.
