Flawless skin is something that every woman, no matter what age she is strives to have, and if it doesn’t come naturally (which it rarely does!) then your best port of call is going to be foundation. Nowadays there are so many formulas, shades, textures and finishes on the market it can seem like a bit of a minefield trying to find “the one” but rest assured, it’s out there.
Aside from finding the right shade, an important factor to bear in mind when choosing a foundation is whether it will work in harmony with your skin to make it look as healthy and fresh as possible. For some that might mean a mattifying, oil-free liquid base and for someone else, a nourishing cream foundation might work better.
So how do you now what type of formula is best for you? In general, certain foundations work better for certain age groups so with this in mind, we thought we’d put together a handy edit of our favourite offerings for those in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50+.
Having just come out of the dreaded teenage years, skin can be a little confused during your early 20s with unwanted break outs part and parcel. It usually settles down as you edge closer to 30 but in the mean time, oil-free, lightweight liquid formulas such as Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide, $48.00, or L’Oréal Infallible Matte Foundation, €12.29, will be your best friend.
This is the age when most women start to want to really take care of their skin and look for more than just coverage in their foundation. The added vitamins, peptides and SPF 20 found in Delilah Time Frame Future Resist Foundation, £34.00, will nourish and protect skin as well as give it a healthy natural glow.

Oil production starts to slow down as you reach your 40s which means you can wave bye bye to break outs (yay!) but it also means that a hydrating formula is a must if you want to keep skin looking plump and fresh. Chanel Vitalumiere, $58.00, has an easy to blend, fluid texture which offers enough pigment to cover imperfections but is lightweight enough to still look like real skin.

With Charlotte Rampling, Tilda Swinton and Helen Mirren all fronting beauty campaigns this year it’s safe to say that the tide is turning in terms of how we perceive beauty and aging. Look for formulas that will brighten the complexion, restore radiance and vitality while minimising pores and blurring lines such as the newly launched Magic Foundation by Charlotte Tilbury, €40.00.
