Oily skin – How to take back control

Minimise the effect with these shine control beauty products

Oily skin….it can be a nightmare, especially during the summer months,  but ladies we must remember that it is (although it may not feel like it at times)  also a blessing as oily skin will show the signs of aging slower than other skin types, you look naturally dewy, creases are less evident and it is more resilient to weather conditions. Ok so it doesn’t feel like it when you have to reapply your makeup throughout the day or you suffer from break outs no matter what age you are. I appreciate the benefits of having this skin in the long term but its also a relationship that doesn’t always sit comfortably with me. So I have tried and tested some products and selected 10 of the best oil beaters on the market.

Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Paper

These guys are a bit more expensive than the usual blotting paper BUT they are almost double the size of a standard sheet and you will only need to use once a day. If you are going to be just using these for your T zone alone I would suggest cutting them in half. They contain a layer of finely ground kaolin, a soft clay that’s famed for its ability to soak up oil and sweat secreted out by your skin. Very fancy! I was impressed by the result and the amount of papers and the light finish makes up for the higher price.

MAC Oil Control Lotion

I have been using this product for about a year now and while no product in the world will stop your skin producing oil it does help……a lot. It’s lightweight and smells lovely and fresh. It leaves a nice base for my foundation to go onto. My make up does last longer with this on and I notice a big difference when I don’t use it.

Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++

This product is designed for oily to very oily skin. It has some impressive ingredients and even more impressive is that it’s animal cruelty free. With the amount of cosmetics being sold worldwide this is a very important factor.  It has a thick consistency but this will melt into skin to a lovely matte finish. I did notice a difference with the amount of oil on my face. Happy days as this will also double up as your facial sunscreen.

NYX Shine killer

This is one of my favorite oil control products.  It really does live up to its name. If you don’t wear a lot of makeup this is great for just a solo base. It softens up any fine lines you may have and just lifts the overall appearance of your skin. Your makeup will stay pretty perfect with this. As per usual NYX have done it again with another winner!

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder

This is an oldie but a goodie. Does what it says on the tin. It really is a great product and for the price its well worth a try if it’s not a staple of your makeup bag already. Just be warned… be light handed using this as you don’t want to look cakey/powdery.

Benefit The Porefessional: License to blot

This is an odd one. It’s not a primer or a powder…it’s an inbetweener. It has a triangle shape which fits in the corners of the nose and doesn’t move your already applied makeup.  It’s conveniently small being just a little larger than a lipstick. However, it does the job, minimising localised shine and I love the packaging.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus

A powder foundation is always a great option for really oily skin. This one from Mac offers good coverage by itself and can also be worn over your own base to keep it in place all day and add some coverage. Just be careful when choosing a shade as powder will darken on contact with oil. Match as close to your own skin shade as possible.

Urban Decay De Slick Setting Spray

This product speaks for itself. It’s long lasting and is actually somewhat waterproof even though it’s not marketed for this purpose. It is non-drying and it’s vegan. It’s perfect for those days where you won’t be near a mirror to check if your face is sliding off. So it has something for everyone.

Milk of Magnesia

If you think I have momentarily taken leave of my senses, I haven’t! This is an old trick amongst makeup artist for years. This is for the oiliest of oily skin types but it will work. I promise.  Apply using your fingertips only on the areas that get oily, this is important otherwise you’ll be flaky dry. Rub it in until you can’t see it anymore and if you have any white residue just wipe it off. Leave to dry (should only take a second) and boom, you’re super matte and ready for makeup.

Benefit Dr. Feelgood Mattifying Balm

This feels amazing and is also very effective. Its main job is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores while soaking up excess oil. It’s packed full of vitamin C and E. This product has received a bit of a bad rep in the past but remember it’s not a moisturiser or a primer. It mattifies your makeup, in turn helping makeup last longer. A little goes a long way otherwise it can crumble or ball-up on your face.
